Laughter in the Bible
God gifts us laughter to cheer & gladden the heart.
That is it’s positive godly purpose but it can be used in unhelpful, unkind & negative ways too.
That is the laughter of mockery, scoffing & ridiculing that is used to tear people down.
May we ever embrace the first form & repeatedly shun the second!!
We have a few proverbs about laughter too – eg. He who laughs last, laughs longest.
The Scriptures reveal to us that the Lord Himself laughs!!
God often laughs at the plans men make or the evil & wicked schemes of those who resist & reject Him (Psalms 2:4; 37:13; 59:8).
Indeed God will have the last laugh. It will be an eternal everlasting laugh!
He who sits in the heavens shall laugh;
The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath,
And distress them in His deep displeasure:
6 “Yet I have set My King
On My holy hill of Zion.” Psalm 2:4-6 NKJV
The laughter of God Himself
Psalm 2 – a great Messianic Psalm – shows us the Lord himself laughing.
He is laughing at the schemes, plots & futile plans of those who reject & rebel against Him.
God is laughing at the nations & their rulers who resist His purposes for this earth & it’s inhabitants (Psalm 2:1-3).
The Lord God laughs at those who resist & rebel against Him & His anointed Messiah – the Lord Jesus Christ.
This Psalm, together with the repeated message of the Scriptures, are crystal clear that a day of judgement & reckoning is coming for ALL.
Evildoers & the wicked will have their final, eternal & just reward – their
comeuppance will surely come.
God will prevail against & put down all who will not embrace His righteous rule.
Salvation is available, in & through ‘the anointed King’ Jesus, to those who will humbly surrender & submit to His Lordship.
God is putting all things right in & through His Son our Saviour.
Kiss the Son whilst there is still time for blessed are those who put their trust in, & take refuge in, Him (Psalm 2:12).
God has issued the decree (Psalm 2:7) both through the Psalmist, & by sending His Son (John 3:16).
In & through His anointed one – Christ Jesus – God is putting all things right (people, places & the planet).
He is seeking to reconcile all things unto Himself (2 Corinthians 5:19) in & through the Son & Saviour.
Christ came once for salvation & He will come again to judge all (Acts 10:42; Romans 2:16; 2 Timothy 4:1; 1 Peter 4:5).
God will laugh eternally, & wipe out all evil, through the endless victory of His Son (Revelation 20:11-15; 21:1-8).
What a mighty & eternal victory to rejoice & delight in. His victory is our victory.
Laugh long & laugh loud. Hallelujah!
- How readily do my plans align with the Lords plans & purposes?
- Am I daily embracing & ‘kissing’ the Son?
- Meditate on the awesome & absolute victory of God in Christ.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for Your eternal victory in Christ.
Lord Jesus each & every day keep me close to & embracing You & your ways.
Holy Spirit keep me walking
in step& in tune to the beat with You.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
