Spiritual Styles / Preferences

God has begun & will faithfully complete His sanctifying work in us (1 Thessalonians 4:3; 1 Corinthians 6:11).
God’s great will & desire being to form Christ in you & in me.
Our sanctification however is influenced & shaped by our preferred spiritual style.
Our Christlikeness forms in response to Word (head), Emotion (heart), Symbol (mystic) or Action (social justice).
Today we will explore a little more about ACTION.

God through the work of His His indwelling Spirit desires that we grow up in all things into Christ.
Post salvation we start out as new born babes who must grow & develop as Christ is formed in us.
Our lives are to conform to Christ in attitude, action, character & conduct.
This will take shape in the depths of our inner being & will manifest (display itself) through our outer life.
Part of this process takes place in & through our actions. We were created for good works!

that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head—Christ—from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love. Ephesians 4:14-16

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10

ACTION (Social Justice) – The path & road to justice.
This is a the spiritual mode of those who like doing. The spirituality of servanthood.
Fuelled by a massive hunger & thirst for justice these people are motivated to make a positive difference in the world.
Activists & crusaders seeking godly & kingdom change in people, places & the planet itself.
Moving & shaking the world means more to them than meetings!!
Primarily it is a spirituality of living & doing.

God is experienced through compassionate action & caring service.
The cry of the poor, the suffering of the needy & the oppression of the powerful are all motivating factors.
Spiritual life is nourished by seeking to bring healing & wholeness to the brokenness & suffering in this world.
They are passionate & zealous to get on & bring about change & transformation.
God is a God of justice & they long to see that justice worked out in the world
It is a style & approach based heavily upon activism & action. Single-minded & highly focussed.
Life is to be lived & it is to be lived helping & serving others

This style & approach to spiritual formation will be a stimulus for social action & serving the world.
It will also enhance our appreciation of the needs of others & the wider world.
It encourages us to know & experience God in & through our actions & works of service.
It will soften our hearts to the suffering of others.
The constant quest & zeal to broker godly change will keep driving these Christians forward..
A danger is we could become isolated & misunderstood in our zeal & passion for justice.
Due to the strong passions evoked we could even end up becoming too moralistic.
In the constant activism & practical action care needs to be taken not to ‘burnout’ too.
Many of our humanitarian agencies & compassion ministries in the Church are hugely influenced & motivated by this style.
Let us give thanks for them & their ministries in our midst.
Let us also seek to be more open to & involved in bringing the justice of God to this world.
Let us act to see the Kingdom come.

For Reflection

  • What part does acting for justice (social action) play in your life? How important is it to you?
  • How are you involved in acting, working or speaking up for justice?
  • Meditate on the Action (social justice) based approach to spiritual formation.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are enabling me to grow up & mature ‘In Christ’.
Lord Jesus soften my heart & fill it with Your compassion.
Holy Spirit keep me serving the Lord, the family of God & humanity,
Through the good works You have prepared for me.
That I may know Father, Son & Spirit with greater passion & desire.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
