Spiritual Styles / Preferences
God has graciously given us everything we need for life & godliness.
He has freely & liberally supplied all we need to grow & develop in Christlikeness.
We are to partner with the Holy Spirit in that work of sanctification.
Our development will be dictated & shaped by how readily we respond to each spiritual style.
Word (head), Emotion (heart), Symbol (mystic) or Action (social justice).
In truth, our response will be a mix of all 4 styles but with our default dominating.
as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 2 Peter 1:3-4
How incredible it is that we are invited to be partakers of the divine nature.
What an amazing, yet totally undeserved, privilege that is. To each day be made more like Jesus!
To fully mature & become like Christ we will need to embrace all 4 spiritual styles.
Christ was a master in all 4 types!!! A kingdom theologian, charismatic, mystic & crusader!
In our own spiritual journey we will need to intentionally embrace & incorporate material & disciplines from all 4 spiritual styles.
We will have to work harder to include those areas where we are weaker or less comfortable around.
In supporting & developing others we will need to be aware of both their dominant style as well as our own default.
Leaders at every level will need to be aware of the impact of these differing styles.
They will need to include content that encapsulates each & every style if they are to effectively nurture all.
To help everyone grow & develop effectively we will need a balance of all 4 styles if we are to help form Christ in people.
Teaching & preaching based on that which has been fully revealed to stimulate thinking & to strengthen belief.
Providing opportunities that will allow people to express themselves creatively & to show the extremes of emotion.
Using material & experiences that stimulate good questions (without providing all the answers!!).
Challenging people to wrestle with mystery but also to be prepared to live with mystery.
We will need to encourage Christian activism & social action that demonstrates the kingdom of God.
In this way we can imitate Christ as kingdom theologians, charismatics, mystics & crusaders.
TOGETHER, with the Holy Spirit & one another, we can do it through word, works & wonders.
- How aware am I of my strong defaults & my weaker, less comfortable areas?
- How am I embracing & investing in content from each spiritual style?
- Meditate on how & when Jesus modelled a mix & blend of each spiritual style.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You invite me to be a partaker of Your divine nature,
That your great will & desire is to form Christ in me.
Lord Jesus thank You that you lead me faithfully on my journey with You.
Holy Spirit keep me developing & maturing in my faith,
Help, & daily strengthen me, as I seek to imitate Christ in all His ways.
That I may know Father, Son & Spirit with greater passion & desire.
This I ask in, & through, Your mighty Name.
