Amazing Grace, Unfailing Love
In Jesus’s parable about a loving father restoring a lost son we see the son given the best robe.
We read about it in Luke 15:11-32. This was the robe reserved for the most honoured guests.
The first thing the father called for was the best robe.
He also called for sandals to be placed upon his returning son’s feet.
So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe [for the guest of honor] and put it on him; and give him a ring for his hand, and sandals for his feet. And bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let us [invite everyone and] feast and celebrate; for this son of mine was [as good as] dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found.’ So they began to celebrate. Luke 15: 20-24
The robe speaks of honour. The sandals speak of freedom & sonship.
Incredibly after carrying out the most dishonourable act possible by leaving with his inheritance this son is welcomed in the most honoured fashion.
The contrite son had planned on returning as a servant, but he was welcomed & restored as a most honoured son.
If he was in any doubt about the nature of his return, welcome & restoration the sandals would have convinced him fully.
The son had sought freedom away from home but found true freedom in his father’s love on his return back home.
Sometimes we don’t realise what true freedom is until we lose it!!
Sandals were reserved for freeman. Servants & slaves went barefoot but freemen & sons wore sandals.
The sandals confirmed, without any shadow of a doubt, that he was fully welcomed back as a son.
A son who was being honoured & celebrated.
What amazing grace & unfailing love being shown by the father.
Again the actions powerfully amplifying & building upon the truth of any words that were shared.
Not only were the gifts brought for him by servants, but they were also placed upon him!
He was being served as a son. Restored fully to his rightful place in the family & family business.
The object & desire of his father’s great love & grace. Just amazing!
This is the welcome & honour we receive when we return to our heavenly Father through Christ our Saviour.
Yesterday we saw how we are clothed in Christ & with the robe of His righteousness.
We too are clothed with sandals to place upon our feet. The sandals of the gospel of peace (Ephesians 6:15).
Our family business is to make known the good news about Jesus.
The sandals of sonship to make know the Son & Saviour, Jesus. Amen!
- Do I suffer from any doubts that I am a beloved child of God?
- In what ways am I making Jesus known through my life?
- Meditate upon the wonder of being honoured sons & daughters of the Most High God.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for Your amazing grace & unfailing love,
Thank you that I belong to You & have an important role in the family business,
Thank you for clothing me with the shoes of the gospel of peace,
Jesus help me to make You known in & through my life.
Holy Spirit strengthen me & make me an effective witness.
In Jesus mighty Name.
