Amazing Grace, Unfailing Love
Jesus’ most powerful parable (Luke 15:11-32) sees a loving father restoring a lost son in several hugely significant ways.
We see the returning contrite son being given the best robe & sandals to place upon his feet.
He is being honoured, loved & valued as a beloved son.
He is also provided with a signet ring to place upon his finger.
So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe [for the guest of honor] and put it on him; and give him a ring for his hand, and sandals for his feet. And bring the fattened calf and slaughter it, and let us [invite everyone and] feast and celebrate; for this son of mine was [as good as] dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found.’ So they began to celebrate. Luke 15: 20-24
The robe speaks of honour. The sandals speak of freedom & sonship.
The ring speaks of authority, trust & significance.
The ring carried the authority to transact business in the name of his father.
What trust & significance has been restored to the son.
He has been entrusted to ‘sign-off’ anything & everything in the name of his father.
This to a profligate son who had run off & squandered his inheritance!
What total forgiveness & what a mighty outpouring of grace.
The son had returned home with his best hope being to take up servitude.
A few words from his father backed up by powerful actions changed everything – FOREVER.
Restoration, reconciliation, significance, purpose, love & worth. Amazing!
Here we see he is being fully trusted to act in the best interests of his father & the family business. WOW!
He is being trusted, despite his previous massive failings, to work things out through relationship with his father.
TOGETHER as family they would serve the family business.
The son’s best hopes & wildest expectations are completely blown away.
He has received more, much much more, than he could ever have hoped or expected (cf: Ephesians 3:20).
Love & forgiveness carry the power to overcome & conquer all. Hallelujah!
This again is a powerful picture of what the Lord invests in us when we return to Him through Christ.
We are given the authority of Christ & sent in His name with potential & power to see God’s kingdom come (Matthew 28:16-20; Acts 1:8).
We have a significant part to play in the family business – the gospel of Jesus & Kingdom of God.
Words, works & wonders are to flow through us out of relationship with Father, Son & Spirit (Romans 15:17-19).
The key will always be to stay close to the Father & work from His amazing grace & unfailing love.
Working from & never for His love & grace! Go to flow & give away rather than grab to get & keep!!.
Freely you have received, freely give (Matthew 10:8).
- Am I aware in what ways the Father wants me authoritatively to represent His family & the family business?
- In what ways am I staying close to Father, Son & Spirit?
- Meditate upon the significance & authority the Father has invested in you.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the significance You place upon me,
That despite my weakness & failings You trust me fully.
What amazing grace & unfailing love!!!
Thank you for clothing me with the authority of Christ,
Jesus help me to represent You faithfully & truly.
Holy Spirit keep strengthening me & releasing Your kingdom words, works & wonders in & through me,
Lord let Your kingdom come, on earth as in heaven.
In Jesus mighty Name.
