Image Bearers

We are fearfully & wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) to be bearers of God’s image (Genesis 1:27).
We each carry & bear the Maker’s mark – Imago Dei.
Incredibly God chooses to use us to reflect His glory into this world.
That is both a wonderful privilege & at the same time a serious challenge!

But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you test Me, you hypocrites?
Show Me the tax money.” So they brought Him a denarius.
And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”
And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left Him and went their way. Matthew 22:18-22

Jesus reminds the Pharisees of that awesome responsibility when they challenge Him about paying taxes to Caesar.
He deliberately alludes to the image on a denarius. Of course, it is Caesar’s.
They should, as good citizens, pay taxes unto Caesar (the government of the day). As should we.
The deeper point & purpose was to remind them whose image they bore!
They belonged to & were to represent God. Their lives were to reflect His glory.

We are to render (give) to the Lord the things that belong to Him.
That is ourselves & all of our lives. All we are & all we have belong to the Lord.
As, Imago Dei, bearers of God’s image we are to reflect His glory to all around us.
It is to be clear & distinctive who we belong to & live for – unlike the blurred illegible stamp of the stray pigeon!
That brings the challenge of authentically representing & revealing God to this world.
It means we need to become more & more like Him to reflect His glory more accurately.

In & of ourselves this would be an impossible task.
Thankfully, we have Jesus living within us though the indwelling Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is ever at work to make us more & more like Jesus (Romans 8:29; 2 Corinthians 3:18).
It is an ongoing transformation as we continue to walk closely with the Lord & stay in step with the Spirit.
When that image is fully restored & revealed it will bring about the restoration & renewal of the whole of creation (Romans 8:18-25).
Hallelujah!! What an incredible role & responsibility we have as God’s image bearers.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I giving unto God what belongs to Him?
  • Am I being a good citizen of both heaven & the earth?
  • Meditate upon rendering unto God what is rightfully His?

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I carry Your image to reflect it to this world,
Give me strength & courage to do that better each & every day..
Lord Jesus thank you that live within me through Your Spirit & lead me through life.
Holy Spirit keep me close to, responsive to & in harmony & step with You,
Help me to be a good citizen of heaven & the earth,
Teach we to rightly give unto the Lord what belongs to Him.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
