Every human carries the Maker’s mark as we are all created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27).
That image is subject to change & it either strengthens or weakens depending on our relationship with God.
We are either moving toward God or retreating from His presence.
God’s desire is that His image be perfected in us through Christ.
But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 2 Corinthians 3:18
And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. 1 Corinthians 15:49
The Holy Spirit, through the work of sanctification, transforms us to become more & more like Jesus.
We are being conformed to the image of the Son (Romans 8:29).
Moment by moment, day by day, unceasingly the Lord is seeking to make us more & more like Christ.
One day that image will be complete & we will be like Him (1 John 3:2).
Sin mars & blurs the image of God in us (remember the stray pigeon’s blurred wing stamp).
A life of repeated sin messes us up so that we don’t know who we are, where we are or who we belong to (much like the stray pigeon).
Believing faith however begins the process of the image of God being renewed in us.
The early church fathers referred to this process as the image of God being either renewed or rubbed out in us.
Renewed in us as we believe on Christ & cooperate with the Spirit’s transforming work of sanctification.
Rubbed out as we continue in sin, rejection & rebellion against God.
Alarmingly if we continue in willful sin & rebellion, we will increasingly rub out the image of God.
The heart increasingly hardens when we continually reject God.
Over time God gives us over to our own designs & desires (Romans 1:18-32).
We either glorify God our Creator & Redeemer or we glorify ourselves & created things.
Sadly, for some (ala Pharaoh – Exodus) there can be a point where there is no turning back.
We either chose life ‘in Christ’ or death & destruction in following our own path through life.
Two roads, one difficult narrow one & one broad easy one – you decide (Matthew 7:13-14).
Choose life, choose Christ. Stay in step with the Spirit to renew the image of God in you.
- In what ways are you beholding (reflecting) the glory of the Lord?
- How responsive am I to the Holy Spirit in my life?
- Meditate upon the image of God being either renewed or rubbed out.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that I am fearfully & wonderfully made in Your image,
Made to reflect Your glory more & more each new day.
Lord Jesus thank you that I am being transformed & made more & more like You each day,
Holy Spirit help & strengthen me in & through the sanctification process,
Keep me close to, responsive to & in harmony & step with You.
Renew me in the Way of life & Way of Christ.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
