Sons and Heirs

Through salvation in Christ, we are adopted (Romans 8:15 & 23; Ephesians 1:5) into the family as God’s beloved & precious children.
As His children we are also the Father’s heirs – co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17; Galatians 4:7).
At the cross we come as equals & in the family of God we continue as equals united ‘In Christ’.
We will explore a little more about our unity & equality as the family of God & body of Christ today.

For you are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.
There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.
And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham.
You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.
Galatians 3:26-29 New Living Translation

‘In Christ’ believers (through faith) are all children of God & united with Him through baptism.
We are all one in Jesus & through the Spirit’s work of sanctification becoming more & more like Him.
God is committed to the same work in each one of us – making us like Jesus. He treats us as equals.
We belong to Christ, & as children of God we belong to one another.
There is no longer Jew or gentile, slave or free, male or female.
We stand & journey together as equals. One in Christ.

‘In Christ’ all racial, social & gender differences, prejudices & distinctions are broken down.
The distinctions & differences continue (they do not disappear) but ‘In Christ’ they do not matter.
Because we belong to Christ & to one another all previous differences & distinctions cease to carry significance.
The barriers that previously separated us are broken down in Christ (Ephesians 2:11-18).
We lay aside all prejudices for the cause of Christ. We now live as siblings & equals before Him.

As children of God we are to love the Lord & love one another.
Respecting, honouring & properly valuing other believers. Even putting their needs before our own (Philippians 2:1-5).
These are the responsibilities of sonship & being part of the body of Christ.
Together we are one ‘In Christ’ (1 Corinthians 12:12-13).
Many members united in one body as co-equals. Wonderful. Living & working together for Christ’s glory.
We greatly serve the cause of Christ by rightly honouring & treating our Christian brethren as equals.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I laying aside my stereotypes & prejudices of others?
  • Am I rightly loving & honouring my brothers & sisters ‘In Christ’?
  • Meditate upon us being equals, united & one as believers in the body of Christ

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for adopting me in Your family,
And for all the great privileges that that bring.
Jesus thank you that in You we are one body, we are equals.
Holy Spirit help me to love, treasure & bless my brothers & sisters ‘In Christ’,
That I might bring glory & honour to Your great Name.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
