Sons and Heirs
Through the saving work of Christ we are welcomed into god’s family as glorious sons & heirs of God (Romans 6:15-22).
Through faith in the saving work of Christ we become reconciled to God (Romans 5:10).
This salvation through faith brings us into a new & intimate Covenant relationship with the Godhead (Father, Son & Spirit).
We will explore a little more about both saving faith & intimacy with God today.
For you [who are born-again have been reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified and] are all children of God [set apart for His purpose with full rights and privileges] through faith in Christ Jesus.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union with the Christ, the Anointed] have clothed yourselves with Christ [that is, you have taken on His characteristics and values].
There is [now no distinction in regard to salvation] neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you [who believe] are all one in Christ Jesus [no one can claim a spiritual superiority].
And if you belong to Christ [if you are in Him], then you are Abraham’s descendants, and [spiritual] heirs according to [God’s] promise. Galatians 3:26-29 Amplified Bible
Through the Incarnation Christ was born into this world.
Born to fulfil the plans & purposes of God for all time. Born to bring salvation.
That salvation is available through faith in the death & resurrection of Christ.
It is a gracious & free gift received from God (Ephesians 2:8-9) but it is also an active response from us.
We believe in the heart & confess with the mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord & Saviour (Romans 10:8-10).
As we do so we are born-again. Born again form above (John 3:1-20) with the Spirit living within us (Ephesians 3:16; 1 Peter 4:14).
We are spiritually transformed from sinners to saints, renewed in the image of God as sons & daughters of the living God.
Immediately the Spirit living in us begins His work of sanctification to make us more & more like Jesus.
The spirit being that died through sin is made alive ‘In Christ’ (Ephesians 2:1 & 5) & we are restored to an intimate relationship with God.
Saving faith is the starting point of a new relationship with God.
‘In Christ’ we are baptised into spiritual union with God & clothed with Christ’s likeness.
Your physical cloths fit you snugly – they are intimate with you.
We are brought into intimacy with God through Christ.
As we spend time with Him we become more & more like him.
His anointing & authority overflowing to touch & transform our lives & the lives of others.
The characteristics of Christ & the values of heaven begin to mark out our lives.
As children of God these are the great privileges we enjoy.
Clothed in Christ & sanctified by the Spirit we are truly, deeply & abundantly blessed – HALLELUJAH!
We are however privileged for purpose. Our inheritance in the Father’s family business.
The privilege of knowing God intimately & the purpose of making Him known in this world.
With the Spirit’s help, strength, guidance & leading may we be faithful & true to both.
- In what ways am I active to fulfil the Father’s purpose through me?
- Am I clothing myself fully ‘In Christ’? Is it a snug fit?
- Meditate upon the nature of saving faith & our intimate relationship with God.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the great gift of saving faith,
Thank you for restoring my relationship with You through Christ the Saviour.
Lord Jesus thank you for uniting me with Yourself through baptism,
And through Your anointing clothing me in Your love, light & life.
Holy Spirit thank you for Your work of sanctification in me,
Keep drawing me into deeper intimacy & increasingly make me active in the family business,
Strengthen me each day as I seek to make the Lord known.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
