Blessed to be a Blessing

From Abraham onwards the people of God carried a blessing to be a blessing (Genesis 12:3, 22:18). God intended that this blessing would come to all creation through His chosen people. ‘In Christ’ we are now a part of that chosen people. We are blessed to be a blessing to the world. Psalm 67 makes this crystal clear.

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us, Selah
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Oh, let the nations be glad and sing for joy!
For You shall judge the people righteously,
And govern the nations on earth. Selah

Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You.
Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us,
And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him. Psalm 67

The psalmist is crying out for God’s blessing.
God’s blessing for him & God’s blessing for all people.
The type of blessing sought carries echoes of the great Aaronic Blessing (Numbers 6:24-26). A blessing of presence, peace & protection.

This Psalm is a blessing & prayer sandwich. It starts & ends with blessing with prayer as the sandwich filler. It is composed of 3 sections:

  1. Prayer for the present blessing of God
  2. Prayer for the Rule of God to extend to all people & all the earth
  3. Prayer for God’s future blessing to all people.

We will explore each theme in the coming days.

As those blessed abundantly in & through Christ, this great task of extending God’s blessing to all people, & all the earth, falls to you & it falls to me. With the Holy Spirit’s equipping & empowering may we be exceedingly fruitful in our God—given assignment. That is bringing his salvation among all the nations (Matthew 28:18-20).

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I receiving the blessing of God?
  • In what ways am I releasing (giving away) the blessing of God to others?
  • Meditate upon the responsibility of being blessed to be a blessing.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that ‘In Christ’ I am blessed to be a blessing.
Abundantly & extravagantly blessed through Your great grace & love.
Jesus thank you that You brought the blessing of God to me,
And that You keep me overflowing with blessing.
Holy Spirit help & strengthen me each day to keep receiving & releasing the blessing of God,
So that salvation might come to the nations.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
