Blessed to be a Blessing

Psalm 67 evoking echoes of the Aaronic Blessing (Numbers 6:24-26) reveals God’s heart to bring salvation blessing to all the earth. The Lord intends to do this through His chosen people. We become a part of that chosen people ‘In Christ’. In blessing them He intends that blessing to extend to all the nations & all the earth. That makes us receivers & releasers of God’s blessing for salvation.

God be merciful to us and bless us,
And cause His face to shine upon us, Selah
That Your way may be known on earth,
Your salvation among all nations.
Let the peoples praise You, O God;
Let all the peoples praise You. Psalm 67:1-3

This blessing & prayer sandwich has 3 parts. The first part is verses 1 to 3. Here we find a heartfelt prayer for the present blessing of God. The psalmist is crying out for God’s blessing upon the people of Israel – the chosen people of God. He desires the Lord’s blessing & favour for all his people.

The psalmist then reveals that the ways of God are known & revealed on the earth through the people of God. Israel – the people of God -know what salvation is. The psalmist’s prayer & desire is that that salvation might come to & be known amongst the nations. In seeing the blessing of God upon His people & hearing about it as they testify of His love, grace & goodness the people of the nations are to come to know of the Lord’s salvation. God releases His blessing upon His people so that they might be a blessing to the world. The light of God shining upon Israel so that they might be a light to the world (Isaiah 49:6; Matthew 5:14-16).

The psalmist then prayers that ALL people would praise the Lord. Having the message of salvation revealed to them & receiving it the people of the nations can enter into the praise of the Lord. We see a clear direction of the flow of Lord’s salvation blessing. From the Lord, to His people & then through them to the nations. The blessing of God is always to be shared with others. Freely we have received & freely we are to give (Matthew 10:8). Our lives are to be a powerful testimony of the Lord’s salvation.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I testifying of the Lord’s blessing & salvation?
  • In what ways does my live reveal God’s blessing & salvation?
  • Meditate upon God shining His face upon you. SELAH

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that ‘In Christ’ I am chosen & blessed to be a blessing.
Jesus thank you that You bring me into the family of God & reveal the blessing of God to me.
Holy Spirit through my life’s attitudes & actions reveal the blessing of God & the power of His love & grace,
Shine the light of Your blessing & favour upon me that salvation might come to the nations.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
