Blessed to be a Blessing

Psalm 67 is all about the blessing of God coming upon, & through, His people so that they are a blessing & a light to the world. Bearers & bringers of God’s salvation to all the nations. A light for the world. In many senses we owe the world as God chooses to work through us.

Then the earth shall yield her increase;
God, our own God, shall bless us.
God shall bless us,
And all the ends of the earth shall fear Him. Psalm 67:6-7

This blessing & prayer sandwich has 3 parts. The third & final part is verses 6 & 7. Here we find a prayer for ta future blessing where the rule of God has been extended to the nations & all peoples are praising Him. A harvest (the land yielding it’s increase) of the nations through the blessing bestowed upon, & flowing through, the people of God.

The psalmist looks forward to & anticipates the blessings of a glorious messianic era. Jews & Gentiles experiencing the presence & blessing of God. The fear of the Lord extending across the globe (Isaiah 11:9; Habakkuk 2:14) so that people from all the nations might praise Him. John in his revelation sees a similar vision of every tribe, tongue, people & nation responding to the Lord’s great salvation (Revelation 5:9, 7:9). The gospel will go fully global with its message of salvation in Christ (Matthew 24:14).

God’s abundant blessing upon His people is designed to provoke the nations to jealousy, so that they come to Him & find salvation. Paul expresses a similar thought in his letter to the Romans (Romans 11:11-15). We, God’s people, are one of the primary ways He seeks to bring that salvation blessing & message to all people & all the nations. We owe it to the world to be faithful & fruitful in the task.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I working to bring God’s salvation to others?
  • How regularly do I pray for the salvation of the nations?
  • Meditate upon the glorious future that awaits the people of God.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you bless us with blessing upon blessing,
So that we are a blessing for the world.
Lord Jesus thank you that are the source & Seed of our glorious salvation blessing.
Holy Spirit equip & empower me to be both faithful & fruitful in carrying the salvation blessing of God unto all people & all the earth.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
