The Holy Spirit is ever seeking & working to bring forth fruitfulness in our lives.
We see a pointer of this in an Old Testament Psalm.
Psalm 112 carries a hint of the fruit of the Spirit.
David (the author) prophetically sensing the work of the Spirit that would be fulfilled in the future.

Praise the Lord!
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord,
Who delights greatly in His commandments.
His descendants will be mighty on earth;
The generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches will be in his house,
And his righteousness endures forever.
Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness;
He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous.
A good man deals graciously and lends;
He will guide his affairs with discretion.
Surely he will never be shaken;
The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance.
He will not be afraid of evil tidings;
His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
His heart is established;
He will not be afraid,
Until he sees his desire upon his enemies.
He has dispersed abroad,
He has given to the poor;
His righteousness endures forever;
His horn will be exalted with honour.
The wicked will see it and be grieved;
He will gnash his teeth and melt away;
The desire of the wicked shall perish.
Psalm 112 NKJV

This psalm of David is a wisdom psalm.
It is an acrostic contemplating & highlighting the blessed life.
The blessing of delighting oneself in the Lord (v1).
The blessing of righteousness (v2, 3 & 9).
The blessing of being gracious & compassionate (v5 & 9).
Blessing in the midst of adversity (v 4,6 & 8).
These are contrasted with those who rebel against & reject the Lord & His ways (v10).

We cannot live for God without the Spirit’s help & strength.

He brings forth fruit in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23).

This psalm highlights each element of the fruit of the Spirit.

  • Love (compassionate v4)
  • Joy (delight v1)
  • Peace (they will have no fear of bad news v7)
  • Patience (steadfast hearts v7)
  • Kindness (generosity, gifts to the poor V 5 & 9).
  • Goodness (their righteous acts [godly good works] will be forever remembered v6)
  • Faithfulness (secure hearts v8)
  • Gentleness (graciousness v4)
  • Self-Control (secure & will never be shaken [inner strength] v6)

The blessed life & resulting fruitfulness stems from knowing & spending time with God.
This is where we need the Holy Spirit’s leading & guiding, wisdom & counsel.
As we spend time with the Holy One we grow in holiness (Romans 6:22, Hebrews 12:10 & 14).
Faithfulness in spending time with the Lord will lead to fruitfulness in our lives.
The fruit of the Spirit in abundance. Hallelujah!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I spending time with the Lord?
  • What evidence is there of God’s blessing & the Spirit’s fruit in my life?
  • Meditate upon the blessed life & it’s fruitfulness.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the many blessings you pour out upon me.
Jesus thank you that You are the sure source of all the blessings in my life.
Holy Spirit help me to faithfully keep spending time daily in the Lord’s presence,
Bringing forth Your fruit in greater abundance in my life.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
