The Holy Spirit produces His fruit in our lives as we stay in step with Him (Galatians 5:16-25).
Natural fruit does not appear without obvious signs. It is the same with spiritual fruit.
The growth & maturation process reveals itself as it progresses.
Buds, leaves, blossoms & fruit precede one another.

Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses went into the tabernacle of witness,
and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds,
had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds.
Then Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord to all the children of Israel;
and they looked, and each man took his rod. Numbers 17:8-9 NKJV

And seeing a fig tree by the road, He came to it and found nothing on it but leaves,
and said to it, “Let no fruit grow on you ever again.”
Immediately the fig tree withered away. Matthew 21:19

As with Aaron the Lord can & does accelerate the fruitfulness of those He favours – Those ‘In Christ’ & in step with the Spirit.
Jesus looked for spiritual fruit in the nation of Israel.
The outer signs (leaves) showed promise but there was no inner substance or reality!
Let us think a little more about buds, leaves, blossom & fruit.
The one follows the other but spiritually what might they mean.

Buds are the first signs of growth & change, springing forth from the stems or branch of plants or tress.
Leaves are a sign of life & growth showing promise of what is to follow.
Blossom is the sure sign that fruit will follow.
They are attractive & beautiful, eye-catching & wonderfully fragrant (2 Corinthians 2:15).
Fruit is what we can taste & see (Psalm 34:8). Pleasing to the eye & sweet to the taste.
We can taste it & others can taste it. Fruit can be eaten as a source of nourishment & strength.
Buds precede leaves, which precede blossom. Fruit always follows blossom.
As in the natural so in the spiritual.

The Holy Spirit works to transform us from glory unto glory & conform us to the image of the son (2 Corinthians 3:18; Romans 8:29).
As this process & transition takes shape it is accompanied by the Spirit’s fruitfulness.
This process of change & developing Christlike character & spiritual maturity will be accompanied by increasing fruitfulness.
The fruit of the Spirit in increasing measure (Galatians 5:22-23). The fruit of close fellowship & communion with the Spirit.
It is also always a dynamic process. Something is always changing & taking new shape & form in our spiritual lives.
Things budding, leafing, blossoming & fruiting in different seasons & in differing areas.
It is a beautiful, ever changing spiritual dynamic. Hallelujah!!!
He who has begun a good work in you will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I budding, leafing, blossoming & fruiting?
  • What is fruiting fully in your spiritual life right now?
  • Meditate upon the process & dynamic of bud to fruit.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the good work You are faithfully completing in me.
Jesus thank you that You are the true vine & the source & supply of my spiritual life.
Holy Spirit teach me to always stay close to & in communion with You,
Keep me sensitive to your words & touch so that I don’t quench or grieve Your work in me,
Keep me growing in fruitfulness with increasing yield.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
