Discernment

We live in an age of information explosion & constant overload.
The internet has enabled people to access information in an instant like never before.
We have access to information & knowledge from many different sources.
But who can we trust & what can we rely upon as truly coming from God?
Discernment is the spiritual process by which we seek to understand & know God’s truth & guidance in our lives.

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God,
a worker who does not need to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

Many Christians are accessing teaching or prophecies from many different sources.
We have new prophecies released globally on the internet or via TV or radio channels almost daily.
All these need proper testing & weighing to see if they are truly from God (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
Many release the word of the Lord but did it truly come from the Lord of the word!!!
We might hear & heed their words & teaching, but do we see & know the testimony of their lives.
The message & the messenger must marry up. There must be alignment between the talk & the walk.
That is why we all need to practice discernment.

Paul writes to Timothy encouraging & exhorting him to be one who ‘rightly divides’ the word of God.
This requires diligence & dedication on Timothy’s part. His approval must come from God not man or self.
Declaring & proclaiming the word of the Lord is a serious business which should not be taken lightly.
Correctly handling here suggests a ploughman moving forward with a straight furrow.
We must beware of those who make detours from Scripture with fanciful & deceiving interpretations.
We all have itchy ears & must be constantly discerning to what we accept as scriptural & gospel truth.

Wonderful things in the Bible I see, Some put there by you & some put there by me!
None of us has a monopoly on God’s truth or the prophetic word – we only see & know in part (1 Corinthians 13:9).
In these days, like the false teachers in the early church, there are those bringing a message of Jesus PLUS+++ when only Christ is needed.
It is important that we are trusting those who are approved by God & ploughing a straight furrow.
A straight furrow from the word & a straight furrow in their lives.
That is why we need to discern – Daily!

For Reflection

  • Who am I listening to & trusting when it comes to receiving & understanding the word of God.
  • In what ways am I weighing & testing what I hear & heed?
  • Am I testing both the message & the messenger?
  • Meditate upon the constant need for discernment.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the Lord of the word,
Help me to stay upon your straight paths that lead to life.
Jesus thank you that You are the way, the truth & the life,
Keep me in Your narrow way.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to test all things & help me to daily discern the will, ways & word of the Lord.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
