Discernment is the means by which we test all things to sift for & find God’s truth.
Through the discernment process we discover God’s will, word & ways.
It is a spiritual task & challenge that is beyond our own minds & intellect.
To do this we need the help & strength of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit revealing truth to my heart & spirit.
But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him?
Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God,
that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.
These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches,
comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.
For “who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:9-16
God reveals his truth to us through the Holy Spirit. The anointing He brings & carries teaches us all things (1 John 2:20 & 26).
Spiritual discernment is a spiritual practise. We cannot rely solely upon our intellect, knowledge & understanding.
The natural man cannot receive things from the Spirit of God. Our hearts are required rather than our heads.
We need intimacy with the Spirit to truly discern the things of God.
Out of the depths of our relationship with the Spirit, He will reveal the deep things of God.
The Spirit alone can reveal to us the things of God & is key in our discernment.
There are numerous ways that truth, information & knowledge can come to us.
From the human spirit which is merely man’s wisdom & understanding.
Through worldly philosophies – many of which are contrary to godly values.
From demonic spirits which will seek to ensnare us in deception, falsehood & lies.
From God’s Spirit revealing the will, word & ways of the Lord.
Each day, in differing ways & measures, we encounter & are subject to all these differing sources.
That is why all things must be weighted & tested using discernment (1 Thessalonians 5:21).
To be able to discern well it is therefore crucial that we develop a good & close relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Ensuring our spiritual senses are sharp & sensitive to His voice & leadings. That we stay in step with Him (Galatians 5:16 & 25).
We have received the Spirit to be able to know the things freely given to us by God.
The Holy Spirit reveals to us the mind of Christ. In this way we are able to discern & know the will, word & ways of God.
Through the Spirit we are instructed to know the mind of Christ. So good.
The Spirit illuminates & magnifies (makes clear) God’s truth & ways for us. Just awesome!
- Am I predominantly head or heart orientated?
- How am I developing my relationship with the Holy Spirit?
- Meditate upon the Spirit’s role in our discernment.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the great gift of the Holy Spirit,
To illuminate my understanding & path through life.
Jesus thank you that You reveal & share Your mind with me
Help me to seek Your ways & will in all things.
Holy Spirit shine the light of Your revelation & illuminate my understanding,
Lead & guide me in the ways of God all my days.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
