We live in a fallen, broken, hurting world & discernment is crucial in our day.
It has always been an important thing for the people of God & is even more necessary in these last days.
As God has been increasingly rejected & rebelled against by so many immorality & idolatry run rife.
To protect us from these evil vices & to keep us on the narrow road that leads to life (Matthew 7:14) we need sound spiritual judgement.
Discernment to seek 8 find the will, word & ways of God & walk in them.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 ESV
But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. Hebrews 5:13 NKJV
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. I John 4:1 NKJV
There are a number of things we need to discern & test in this life.
First & foremost we need to practise discernment to find the will of God for our lives.
We also need to discern & distinguish between good & evil so that we can walk in the good.
We also need to test, weigh & discern the ‘spirits’. The many voices that crave, & compete, for our attention.
We need to be constantly checking whether the source of what we hear & heed comes from God.
These are all a means of protecting us from falsehood & error.
They are like lenses that enhance what we see & perceive – sharpening & strengthening our ability to make sound judgements.
Not conforming to the pattern & philosophies of this world helps us in our discernment.
We are to be conformed to the image of the Son (Roman 8:29) rather than the values & cultures of this fallen world.
Testing all things is also greatly helped by the renewal of our minds.
Submitting to the Holy Spirit & Scripture brings about transformation in our thinking.
What I believe affects ( in every way) how I behave. Attitudes impact actions.
Let us increasingly shape & mould our lives to align with Scripture & in response to the Spirit’s leading & guiding.
This will be a solid foundation for our discernment.
In Israel’s day & in the early church there were many false prophets at work (Jeremiah 29:24-32; 2 Corinthians 11:13-15).
The fact that someone claims to speak for God, or from God, is no guarantee that what they speak or share comes from God.
In the end times & last days we are warned to be extra careful & heedful (Matthew 24:24; Colossians 2:8; 1 Timothy 4:1).
False prophets & ‘antichrists’ are at work in our day & we must be on the watch for them . Sober & alert.
Christ has set us free (Galatians 5:1) & we do not want to become ensnared & enslaved again by deception & lies.
Discernment will enable us the stand fast in the liberty we have in Christ.
Stand fast, test all things, keep discerning daily.
- Am I confident that I exercise renewed attitudes & actions?
- What are the major temptations & seductions of this world that I battle against?
- Meditate upon the vital importance of sound discernment in these last days.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the wonderful & wide freedom I have ‘In Christ’.
Jesus thank you that You are the way, the truth & the life,
Keep me hearing, heeding & following Your voice of truth.
Holy Spirit open my spiritual eyes & ears to follow Your lead,
Guide me to God’s peace in my decision making.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
