Fight the Good Fight

Jesus, our Saviour & mighty champion, guarantees the victory of God against sin, death, Satan & evil.
When Jesus returns He will fully enforce His victory, overthrow Satan & banish all evil (Revelation 19-22).
Until that time as soldiers in the Lord’s army we are encouraged to fight the good fight of faith.
We must continue battling against rebellious spiritual forces as we await the return of Jesus.
To aid us in the battle we have faith, a good conscience & the prophecies made over us & for us.
Today we will look at the prophecies we receive.

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you,
that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:18-20 NKJV

Paul highlights significant prophecies made to Timothy that can aid him in the fight.
These are likely specific detailed prophetic words released to Timothy earlier in his life, on entering ministry & at his ordination.
Timothy would be well aware of them (1 Timothy 4:14). He received gifts for ministry through the laying on of hands & the prophetic word.
Timothy has been given a mandate for ministry & these prophecies pointed towards that.
These prophetic words are weapons Timothy can use as he warfares.
A powerful resource to be repeatedly called upon & used.

There are prophetic words released unto us for the moment & those given to us for the longer term.
Many (most likely the majority) of the prophetic words we receive are ‘now’ words.
Words, pictures, or scriptures that encourage, strengthen & build up individuals, families, groups or churches.
They bring illumination & inspiration in & for the moment, or immediate short-term context, we find ourselves in.
These must be responded to appropriately to receive the full benefit.
Alongside this there are life shaping & life changing prophetic words that we can build our lives, faith, ministry & mission upon.
These require careful attention & considerable prayerful investment to see them worked out & fulfilled in our lives.
This is the type of prophetic word that I think Paul is reminding Timothy about here.
There are to be responded to, carried forward, remembered repeatedly & reflected upon in prayer to extract the full benefits.

The reason for this is that they provide ongoing guidance & direction for us.
These prophetic words are very specific & carry great significance for our lives & ministries.
They carry weight & must be put through careful & thorough testing (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21).
Seeking the counsel & confirmation of trusted others is always an important step in the testing & weighing process (Proverbs 11:14, 15:22).
Once established as genuinely from the Lord they can be treasured & trusted.
They highlight & point to the Lord’s best plans & promises for us as individuals, families, groups or churches.
Once noted ( write them down/ record them) & carried in our spirits they can be continuously prayed into.
They are to be constantly stewarded as we allow them to sink deeper & deeper into our hearts & spirits.
We don’t just sit back & wait for these types of prophecies to come about.
We pray into them & act in line with them as God given opportunity presents itself.
That is why they can be a source of help & strength as we fight the good fight.
They carry both power & purpose & remind us of God’s best & specific intentions for us.
They help us find & stay upon the right paths & adopt God’s strategies as we continue to fight the good fight.
Remember, keep relying upon, keep reflecting upon & keep prayerfully engaging with the significant prophecies made concerning you.
By them, & through them, you will find strength & resourcing to fight the good fight.

For Reflection

  • Am I mindful of specific life shaping prophecies the Lord has given to me?
  • In what ways am I repeatedly engaging with the significant prophecies the Lord has given to me?
  • Meditate upon the different types of prophetic words we receive as individuals, families, groups or churches.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you are the Living God,
And that You continue to speak powerfully & prophetically into my life.
Jesus thank you that You remain my mighty Champion,
That through Your death & resurrection I have eternal life.
Holy Spirit help me to discern & steward the specific ‘life, ministry & mission’ prophecies you have given me, so that I may fight the good fight & keep waging war effectively.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
