Fight the Good Fight

Jesus is our mighty champion & He has won the ultimate & eternal victory in the war against sin, death, Satan & evil.
Through Christ’s death & resurrection the victory of God is guaranteed.
However, the battle continues until Jesus returns & the kingdom of God comes in all it’s fulness (Revelation 11:15).
We are all soldiers in the Lord’s army. We ourselves, & the world we live in, are a battlefield.
We are to play our part in the continuing spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-20) as we fight the good fight of faith.
Paul encourages Timothy, his true son in the faith (1 Timothy 1:2), in this ongoing battle & fight.

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you,
that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. I Timothy 1:18-20 NKJV

Paul, Timothy’s spiritual father & mentor, brings a charge to his spiritual child.
It is a strong spiritual challenge & command to live right so that he can fight well & hard.
Timothy has been given a mandate & he must fulfil it.
God has resourced him in a number of ways & Timothy must take full advantage of them.

There are a number of things by which Timothy is to wage the good warfare.
How we live equips & empowers us in the fight.
Timothy is to be mindful of prophecies spoken to him & over him.
He is to stay strong in faith & keep his conscience clean & clear.
We will explore more about these tools & weapons in the next few days.

Timothy is being exhorted to make full use of everything God has put at his disposal.
In taking up the resources entrusted to him he is able to wage the good warfare.
As he does so he safeguards his faith from the dangers of shipwreck.
In doing so he lays hold of eternal life (1 Timothy 6:12).
Just like Timothy we too have been resourced, equipped & empowered to fight the good fight.

For Reflection

  • Who is my spiritually parenting me? Am I being mentored?
  • Am I mindful of the prophecies the Lord has given to me?
  • Meditate upon what it means to wage the good warfare.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the resources You freely pour forth into my life,
That You equip & empower me in every way necessary.
Jesus thank you that You are my mighty Champion,
Thank you that You have won the day through Your death & resurrection.
Holy Spirit help & strengthen me in the ongoing battle & fight,
That I may wage war effectively.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
