Fight the Good Fight

Jesus’ death & resurrection has guaranteed the eternal victory of God (Revelation 11:15).
We, soldiers in the Lord’s army, are called to fight the good fight.
The prophecies we have received inspire, aid & assist us.
In faith we lean totally & confidently upon the Lord.
Alongside this we are to maintain a good conscience.
How we live matters!!!

This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you,
that by them you may wage the good warfare, having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. 1 Timothy 1:18-20 NKJV

The Lord created each one of us with a sharp & sound conscience.
It is a God given inner moral compass to help & direct us to make right & godly choices in this life.
Our consciences will convict us (witness & speak to us) of right & wrong, truth & error, good & bad, holiness & evil (John 8:9).
They can be weak or strong (1 Corinthians 8:7,10,12). They can also be violated & seared through repeated & deliberate sinful & wicked living.
They then become defiled (1 Timothy 4:2; Titus 1:15) & defective. As a result, they become unreliable guides.
As unreliable & untrustworthy guides they will lead us ever more away from, & off, the true & narrow path (Matthew 7:14) that leads to life.
How we live matters & it matters in everything & every way!!!
We rebel against & reject our conscience to our peril!

As Paul exhorts Timothy, we are those who are to live with a good & pure conscience (1 Timothy 1:5, 19; 3:9; 2Timothy 1:3).
We need to maintain a sharp sensitivity to our consciences. They need to be watched over & used wisely.
Close scrutiny of our daily attitudes & actions by Scripture & the Spirit will help us here.
Responding quickly to check our ways when our conscience ‘pricks’ or offends us.
Your conscience is your inner friend & in-built helper so hearken & heed it speedily, well & fully.
With a sound & pure conscience you will sleep easily & soundly at night because of harmonious relationships (Acts 24:16).
You will stay on the narrow road & keep inheriting eternal life (1 Timothy 6:12).
You will stay fighting the good fight in true godly fashion.

Our consciences will either accuse or excuse us as we make choices on lives journey (Romans 2:15).
To keep fighting the good fight we need sharp, sensitive, sanctified (through renewed minds Romans 12:2) consciences.
This will be a great help & powerful weapon as we continue to fight the good fight.
Keeping us on the Lord’s narrow road of life & paths of righteousness & peace.
What a wonderful gift from the Lord & what a helpful & powerful resource in the battle that is life.
Steward the gift of conscience well & use it wisely. If you do it will serve you well.
Through prophecies, faith & a good conscience keep fighting the good fight. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • Am I mindful & readily responsive when my conscience ‘pricks’ me?
  • In what ways am I watching over my conscience?
  • Meditate upon the value of a good & pure conscience.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the gift & resource that is my conscience,
Help me to keep it sound, sharp & sensitive to Your will, word & ways.
Jesus, Good Shepherd of my soul, keep my hearing & heedful of Your sweet voice,
Keep me following closely after You..
Holy Spirit sanctify my thinking & renew my mind, direct my every action,
That I might keep my conscience good & pure.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
