Prayer Matters

Prayer is a life breath for the Christian & we cannot survive without it.
It is the main source of life & strength in our relationship with God.
We have seen how prayer is a priority for us & also explored the pattern that Jesus taught us along with the differing postures of prayer.
Today I want to think about PERSEVERING in prayer.
This is a vital key as it is highlighted by Jesus (Luke 11:5-8). If Jesus instructs us to do it then it must be necessary & important.
This is then followed up by the apostle Paul who prayed ceaselessly & exhorted the churches to do likewise (Colossians 4:2; 1 Thessalonians:1:3, 2:13; Romans 1:9).
Praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) is persevering prayer at work!

Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose heart, saying: “There was in a certain city a judge who did not fear God nor regard man. Now there was a widow in that city; and she came to him, saying, ‘Get justice for me from my adversary.’ And he would not for a while; but afterward he said within himself, ‘Though I do not fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubles me I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.’
”Then the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge said. And shall God not avenge His own elect who cry out day and night to Him, though He bears long with them? I tell you that He will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will He really find faith on the earth?” Luke 18:1-8 NKJV

Since Jesus came to this earth, died & rose again, the Kingdom has come, is coming & is yet to fully come.
That is why we are taught by Jesus to pray thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10).
Prayer is one of the main ways we partner with the Lord as fellow workers (1 Corinthians 3:9) to see the Kingdom come more fully on this earth.
That Kingdom, & God’s will is contested & resisted by rebellious human wills (Luke 7:30) & also the spiritual forces who have fallen & are now serving Satan in opposition to the Lord (Ephesians 6:10-13).
We must persevere in prayer because we are in an ongoing spiritual battle.
Persevering in prayer is not about praying long enough or hard enough to force the Lord’s hand!!!
He is in no way like the corrupt judge. On the contrary He loves to give good gifts to His children (Luke 11:9-13) – especially the Holy Spirit!!!
Keep persevering in prayer for more of the Holy Spirit & more of God’s kingdom here on this earth.
That Kingdom comes through persevering prayer combined with bold & courageous action.

Prayer is powerful & it makes a difference. It changes us, it changes, people, it changes places & it changes this planet.
That is why the rebellious & wicked spiritual forces seek to thwart it (Romans 1:13; 1 Thessalonians 2:18).
God hears & answers our prayers, but they are sometimes intercepted leading to a delay in us receiving the answer (Daniel 10:10-20).
God is also perfectly loving & will never force His will or ways upon anyone – free will counts & God will never violate it.
Part of the mystery of prayer is that God answers prayer so wonderfully even amid so many contrary & competing free wills!
Just amazing!!!

Prayer makes a difference & persevering pray makes an even bigger difference.
We keep actively praying & pushing until something happens. We refuse to give up no matter how hard the fight becomes.
Pray until you get the breakthrough – persevere, endure & patiently wait upon the Lord.
Persevering through prayer reveals our passion & desire as we patiently (but actively) wait for the Lord to respond & act (Psalm 40:1).
Like Jacob we are to persevere in the struggle that prayer can be until we lay hold of the blessing of God (Genesis 32:22-30).
As we persevere, we are to keep crying out for the justice, peace & joy of God’s Kingdom (Romans 14:17) to come & touch & transform people, places & this planet.
Keep persevering in prayer because persevering prayer overcomes & triumphs. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How easy do I find it to patiently wait & endure in prayer?
  • What am I persevering over in prayer right now?
  • Meditate upon the need for perseverance, resilience & spiritual stamina in prayer.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that Your ear is ever inclined towards me,
That you are ready & willing to respond to my every prayer.
Jesus thank you for teaching us & showing us how to persevere,
Thank you that You persevered in prayer upon the cross to bring us salvation.
Holy Spirit give me strength & resilience to keep persevering in prayer,
To patiently wait in prayer until I lay hold of the blessing of God.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
