Servants to the Saints – Angels.

The angels are created spiritual beings who are God’s messengers & servants.
Through His great grace & mercy the Lord assigns His angels to aid & assist His saints.
As we saw yesterday they bring strength & encouragement as well as answers to prayer & protection.
Another way the angels occasionally help & bless the Lord’s beloved children is by providing direction.
There are several instances in Scripture where the Lord sends angels to reassure & direct His people of the way forward.

There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism
(not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God),
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers having been made subject to Him. 1 Peter 3:21-22

The angels are subject to the Lordship of Christ & therefore do His bidding (Psalm 103:20).
We see in various places where God sends angels to show His people the way forward.
Mary is visited by the angel Gabriel with news of Christ’s coming (Luke 1 26-38). Joseph is visited by angels through his dreams.
Once to believe & fully accept Mary’s testimony (Matthew 1:20-24) & two other times to rescue the infant Christ from Herod (Mathew 2:13 & 19-20).
The angels announce the good news of Christ’s birth & where to find Him to humble shepherds (Luke 2:8-20).
The faithful women visiting the tomb are told what to do by angels following Christ’s resurrection (Luke 24:4-8).
The apostles are directed by angels following Christ’s ascension (Acts 1:9-11).

Both Phillip (Acts 8:26) & Cornelius (Acts 10:3, 7,22) were divinely instructed by angels.
Paul too was instructed about what would happen & should happen in & through the shipwreck upon Malta (Acts 27:23-26).
The angelic messengers bringing specific instruction & precise direction.
All of these are examples of direction being brought to believers through angelic visitations or encounters.
It is clear therefore that there are times when the Lord will direct His people through the medium of angelic messages.
Whilst it is not the most common or usual form of direction from the Lord nevertheless it is one we should stay open to.

In many of these biblical encounters the presence of angels brings reverential fear to the believers.
We don’t need to directly seek angelic aid as we look only unto the Lord but we do need to be ready to receive the angels help & assistance.
We will however be expected to heed any message they might bring to us from the Lord.
We are always to respect the angels, but we are never to worship them (Colossians 2:18).
The angels exist to glorify the Lord & so must we (Luke 2:13-14 ; Revelation 5:11-12). Hallelujah!!!
Don’t forget the angels but keep giving all the glory unto the Lord.

For Reflection

  • Have I ever received direction through the ministry of angels?
  • What type of angelic encounter or visitation might I have received & benefitted from?
  • Meditate upon differing forms of the ministry of angels unto the saints.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for your endless providential love & care for me,
Thank you that You have assigned Your angels to assist, aid & even on occasion guide me.
Jesus thank you that You are Lord of All, Far above & far superior to all the angels,
That they exist to do Your bidding & follow Your orders.
Holy Spirit keep my focus ever upon the Lord & always giving all the glory unto Him,
Grateful for the ministry of angels but never glorifying them.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
