Honoring God with our Bodies

We have been created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) as triune beings.
Each of us has been gifted & blessed with a body, a soul & a spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23).
They overlap & interrelate in an intricate & complex way that is beyond our full understanding.
We are fearfully & wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14) & are exhorted to honour the Lord in & through our bodies.

Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you,
whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Paul exhorts the Corinthian church & believers to use their bodies & spirits to honour the Lord.
The context is that they were using their newfound freedom in Christ in inappropriate & ungodly ways.
The freedom & liberty we are given is to be used to honour the Lord – at all times & in all our ways for we belong to Christ.
We belong to the Lord in two ways – He created us & He redeemed us.
As the new humanity in Christ (new creations 2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 6:15) we are to live in a new way through godliness & holiness.
Led & directed by Scripture & the Spirit we are to use our bodies, souls & spirits to bring glory & honour unto the Lord.
That is the worship that the Lord longs to spring forth from the temple that is our body.

We were created to be worshippers of & witnesses for the Lord.

This is the proper & perfect way to use our bodies, souls & spirits.

Psalm 141 gives us 4 helpful insights into how to honour the Lord with our bodies.

  1. Lift your hands verse 2
  2. Guard your mouth & lips verse 3
  3. Fix your eyes verse 8
  4. Watch & guard your heart verse 4

We will explore each of these insights from Psalm 141 in greater depth over the coming days.
In the meantime, think about how you are currently using your hands, eyes, lips & heart to serve the Lord.
Give prayerful thought about how you might use them to honour & glorify the Lord even more.

For Reflection

  • Am I truly worshipping & witnessing as a triune being?
  • In what ways do I use the differing components of who I am to worship & witness for the Lord?
  • Meditate upon how you might better honour the Lord in & through your body.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are my creator & redeemer
Jesus thank you that You have blessed me with a body, soul & spirit,
May I use them to serve you faithfully & well.
Holy Spirit keep me using my body, soul & spirit creatively to honour & glorify the Lord.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
