Honouring God with our bodies

We are fearfully & wonderfully made (Psalm 139:13-14) & are exhorted to honour the Lord in & through our bodies.

Psalm 141 gives us 4 helpful insights into how to honour the Lord with our bodies.

Lift your hands verse 2
Guard your mouth & lips verse 3
Fix your eyes verse 8
Watch & guard your heart verse 4
Today we will explore what is means to lift the hands to honour the Lord.

Lord, I cry out to You;
Make haste to me!
Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You.
Let my prayer be set before You as incense,
The lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Psalm 141: 1-2

I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting;
in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety and moderation,
not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works. 1 Timothy 2:8-10

The lifting of the hands in prayer & praise is one of the most ancient forms of worship.
It is a simple yet powerful way to bless & honour the Lord.
We see it in both the Old & New Testament as a part of the prayer & worship of God’s people.
It is both a sign of surrender & of opening oneself up more fully to the Lord.
It is one of the ways by which we more deeply connect with the Lord.
An easy thing to do physically that resonates in & impacts our souls & spirits in profound & powerful ways.

The Hebrew word is ‘Yadah’ & means to extend the arm & fingers.
Through our bodies we are extending our souls & spirit to connect with the presence of the Lord.
The context in the New Testament passage is one of passion & purity.
With holy hands & righteous desire we pursue the presence of the Lord.

We humbly surrender as we lift our hands to bless the Lord.
In praise & in prayer we can lift both our hands & our hearts to honour the Lord.
Expressing it through our bodies with freedom helps to bring freedom to our souls & spirits too!!
The body taking the lead where the soul & spirit might rightly follow.
Lift up your hands to bless & honour the Lord. Hallelujah!

For Reflection

  • Am I truly free to use my body to bless & honour the Lord?
  • In what ways do I use my hands in praise & prayer?
  • Meditate upon lifting the hands in praise & prayer as a means of humble surrender.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are my glorious creator & mighty redeemer.
Jesus thank you that You humbled Yourself unto death upon that cross,
Help me to humbly surrender all to You.
Holy Spirit bless & grace me with the freedom & courage to use my body expressively in praise & prayer,
Give me greater passion & deeper purity as I continue to seek Your face & presence.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
