Stay the course, Finish well

We are on a lifelong pilgrimage, & journey with Jesus, as Christian people.
On that journey we need to start right, stay strong & finish well.
Joseph is an example & an encouragement for us. He started off a little shakily but finished well.
Through mixed fortunes of suffering & success the Lord was with him throughout his life.
He is a type of Christ (Saviour) in that His faithfulness to God rescued people & nations.

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7

The Lord was with Joseph, and he was a successful man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian….But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison… Genesis 39:2 & 21

Joseph kept the faith & increasingly learnt what it meant to stay in close & constant fellowship with God.
He started out full of potential & ended up in a very powerful & prominent position.
Through suffering & success the Lord forged & formed godliness in Joseph’s character.
That journey went from father’s pet, to pit, to Potiphar’s house, to prison & to the palace.
Hated by his bothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused & imprisoned, betrayed & forgotten by men.
Joseph was treated harshly & most unjustly by people, but the favour of the Lord never left him.
Incredibly, Joseph not only kept his faith, but he also strengthened & refined it through his experiences in life.
The arrogance & brashness of youth & immaturity was transformed into godly wisdom which was tempered with prophetic revelation.

Wherever he ended up Joseph’s God given gifts of leadership, administration & strategic management came to the fore.
Joseph served faithfully, in both the small & large matters, in the midst of repeated suffering & also at the height of his success.
His life’s journey had taught him the importance of:

  • Total Integrity
  • Total humility
  • Total trust
  • Total forgiveness

These qualities, virtues & Christlike characteristics enabled the Lord to promote Joseph (almost instantly) & use him powerfully.
We will explore each in more depth over the coming days.

On the path & race that is set before us may we be those who stay strong & finish well (Hebrews 12:1-2).
Like Jesus may we be those that faithfully finish the work the Father gives us to do (John 17:4).
Like Jacob, who became Israel, may we be those who ever persevere through prayer with the Lord (Genesis 32:22-30).
Just like Joseph may we see the hand of God & His favour with us through thick & thin (Genesis 41:51-52 FOR GOD HAS).
Prayerful, patient, perseveres with the Lord who will lay hold of the promises of God.
Keep faithfully serving & stay close to the Lord so that you stay strong through the storms that life will undoubtedly bring.

For Reflection

  • In what ways right now am I experiencing suffering and/or success?
  • Do I see the Lord’s favour in the midst of my circumstances & am I experiencing His presence with me?
  • Meditate upon starting right, staying strong & finishing well.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You never leave me or forsake me.
Jesus thank you that You are the author & perfector of my faith.
Holy Spirit help me to constantly fix my eyes on Jesus,
So that I might run the race with perseverance, stay strong & finish well.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
