The Power of Communion
Jesus inaugurated the New Covenant by giving up His body & shedding His blood upon the cross.
He made this clear through a special meal (Luke 22:14-23) with his disciples at the Last Supper (Communion).
We will spend today thinking over how covenants were ratified & sealed in the bible.
That will help us to see that there is real power in, & through, Communion.
But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry,
in as much as He is also Mediator of a better covenant,
which was established on better promises.
For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. Hebrews 8:6-7
Biblically covenants are ratified (agreed) over a meal & sealed (confirmed) with blood.
We see this with powerfully with Abraham’s great promise – blessed to be a blessing & the promise of the Land (Genesis 15).
Abraham prepares the meal & sacrifice & God seals it supernaturally.
Then with Moses & the deliverance of the Israelite’s from Egypt (Exodus 12).
The Israelites mark the first Passover meal & sprinkle the blood of the sacrificed lamb over the doorway.
Moses prepares the people & God then supernaturally delivers them from Pharaoh the cruel tyrant & wicked oppressor.
Jesus is using this powerful imagery at the Last Supper.
Evoking the treasured hopes & dreams of the people of God.
He is the Lamb of God who will be sacrificed to take away the sin of the world (John 1:29).
The New Covenant is being established & agreed over a special meal.
It is then sealed & confirmed by the saviour’s great sacrifice upon the cross (Hebrews 10:12).
A perfect & eternal sacrifice to save people form their sins.
The death & resurrection of Christ bringing forgiveness, freedom & eternal life. Hallelujah!!!
Through Christ there is a NEW Exodus & a NEW Return from Exile.
We are rescued & freed from sin, death & evil. That is the NEW Exodus.
We are also returned to a relationship with God through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Freed from slavery to sin & death & brought into the promised land of fellowship & friendship with the Father.
That is the NEW Return from Exile. Both are freely forever ours ‘In Christ’.
Communion celebrates all this as we remember the New Covenant ratified through a meal & sealed in blood.
The precious body & blood of our dear saviour Jesus Christ.
Hallelujah!! What a saviour & what a special meal we are invited to at the King’s table.
Keep remembering & celebrating the POWER of Communion.
- Am I making the most of the Communion meal as an opportunity to commune & fellowship with the Risen Christ?
- Do I truly appreciate the lengths Christ went to so that I could experience the New Covenant & the power of Communion?
- Meditate upon how the New Covenant was ratified & confirmed by Jesus.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you for the New Covenant available ‘In Christ’,
For the joy there is in fellowshipping & communing with You through your Son, my Saviour.
Jesus thank you that You gave up Your body & shed Your blood to save me,
That through You I experience a spiritual exodus & return from exile.
Holy Spirit keep me fully appreciative of the depths of love & price paid for my salvation,
Keep me remembering & celebrating the power of Communion.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
