The Power of Communion

Communion is a love feast & also a celebration of unity.
We celebrate & give thanks for the love God demonstrated in sending Christ as our saviour (John 3:16; 1 John 4:10).
We also celebrate & give thanks that we are at one with God through Christ & that we are also one body together as the Lord’s people (Romans 12:4-5). This will be our concluding focus for this TFD series.

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” Ephesians 4:4-6

Yesterday we were considering what it means to take communion in a worthy manner.
As we saw that requires the constant examination of our hearts.
We need to discern & honour the Lord’s sacrificed body (Jesus’ physical body) & also His spiritual body, which is His beloved people.
We walk in a worthy manner & approach the Communion table worthily when we love the Lord fully & when we mutually love, honour & respect one another as His people. Both aspects are important.

In coming to the Lord’s Table we are not only to love & honour the Lord but also to love & honour one another. We give thanks for the Lord’s precious body & blood that secured our salvation.
And we also recognise & rejoice that the Risen Lord’s body is His people . Both are precious & priceless truths.
We belong to the Lord & we belong to one another. One bread & one cup for the one body.
This is part of the beauty & power of Communion.

Both are to be honoured & rightly respected.
The Corinthian church was getting this wrong & Paul had strong words of warning & correction for them.
All divisions & differences are to be set aside as we share this special meal.
We are one with the Lord & one with one another (John 17:20-23; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14).
It is no coincidence that Paul teaches & instructs about life in the Body of Christ following his teaching & instruction about the Lord’s Supper!!! There is a vital connection. SELAH

There remains an open invitation to the love feast & celebration of unity that the Lord’s Supper is.
This special Communion meal made available at such great cost.
Let us keep meditating on the great truths it proclaims, the mysteries it enacts & the power it contains.
A meal to be nourished, sustained & strengthened in through the Lord’s love, light & life. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • How passionate am I for the Lord & His people?
  • How good am I at loving & honouring my brothers & sisters ‘In Christ’?
  • Meditate upon Communion as a great feast & celebration of love & unity.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the love You demonstrated through Calvary’s cross,
That You were in Christ reconciling me, & this world, unto Yourself.
Jesus thank you that You sacrificed Your body to save me,
And that You bespokely placed me in Your body as a part of Your people.
Holy Spirit keep me rightly & passionately loving the Lord & His people,
And use me to bring others into the family of God.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
