Strength for the Battle

God is our strength, defence & salvation (Exodus 15:2. The One who watches over us & gives us strength in the battle.
Yesterday we saw how our Identity ‘In Christ’ is a key component in the battle.
It is who you know that counts – knowing Jesus is critical in the spiritual battle (compare with Acts 19:15) .
Intimacy & identity are powerful sources of strength in the battle as is the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
That will be our focus for today.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.
All that belongs to the Father is mine.
That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.’ John 16:13-15

We receive several very powerful things through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
We receive His power & strength. He is the Spirit of might (Isaiah 11:2), fortitude & strength.
He receives from the Father, & the Son, & makes it known to us.
How wonderful is that. A rich source of strength, guidance & exhortation.
A fabulous & most helpful resource to deploy during any battle!!!

We are also encouraged that Jesus within us through His Spirit is greater (stronger) than our adversary, Satan (1 John 4:4).
The victory of Jesus made available to us through the presence & power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.
We need to honour, heed & obey the Spirit at all times & avoid quenching or grieving His work in us & through us.
The encouragement is to keep being filled (to overflowing) continuously with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:17-21).
We are to keep asking, seeking & knocking for more & more of the Spirit (Luke 11:9-13).
That is a prayer that the Father always loves to answer YES.

The indwelling Spirit not only empowers us, but He also prays through us (Romans 8:26-27).
Those prayers are always in full alignment & agreement with the word, will & ways of God.
When we don’t know what to do or what or how to pray, we need to look to the Holy Spirit.
Strength will well up & flow freely as we unite our hearts & wills with His.
The fruit He brings to our lives is also incredibly helpful (Galatians 5:22-23).
Joy which is a source of strength (Nehemiah 8:10) & self-control or spirit strength which is essential for any soldier.
We have an inbuilt source of power, strength & effective prayer. How awesome is that!!
You are incredibly well resourced to face any & every battle that comes your way.

We are soldiers in the Lord’s army & we have been incredibly well stocked & supplied.
We have all the weaponry, strategy & tactics we could ever need. Our job is to use them & use them wisely & well.
We do that by developing a strong & intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit.
He is the one who can lead & guide us in the midst of any & every battle.
A commanding officer within, & alongside, as we fight the good fight. So, so good.
That is a most powerful source of strength on the battlefield. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How seriously & passionately am I pursuing more & more of the Holy Spirit in my life?
  • In what ways am I developing more intimacy with the Holy Spirit?
  • Meditate upon the power, strength, guidance & prayer we can draw from the Holy Spirit in the midst of the battle.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are my strength, my defence & my salvation,
That You sent Your beloved Son to save me.
Jesus thank you that You are my victory & through You I overcome,
Thank you that You are the Strongman who triumphs over my adversary.
Holy Spirit thank You for the strength & power you provide for me,
Lead & guide me in, & through, the battles of life,
Standing & staying strong as I fight the good fight.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
