Strength for the Battle
We battle against the world (the enemy around us), the flesh (the enemy within us) & the devil (the enemy above us).
God is our strength, defence & salvation in that battle (Exodus 15:2) & Christ is our victory (1 Corinthians 15:57).
We have seen how our Identity ‘In Christ’, intimacy with Jesus & the indwelling presence & power of the Holy Spirit are huge battle aids.
It is who you know that counts – knowing Jesus & relying upon the Spirit’s guidance are critical in the spiritual battle.
Intercession & prayer are also a powerful tool & weapon at our deposal. That will be our focus for today.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end
with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— and for me, that utterance may
be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel,
for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak. Ephesians 6:17-20
Prayer & intercession are one of the things we can draw strength from in the spiritual battle.
We pray in the Spirit (led & guided by Him) & for the saints (our brothers & sisters In Christ).
Intercession flows for the place of intimacy & to pray in the Spirit is to pray the mind of Christ with the Spirit’s perspective.
As we pray for one another led by the Spirit spiritual strength flows from within (from the Spirit) & help comes from heaven above.
That is the power of prayer. It matters & it makes a difference. EVERY time.
It impacts the one praying, the one being prayed for & influences the spiritual atmosphere. That is spiritual warfare.
A good practise is to be repeatedly & regularly praying for the great hope of the gospel to be proclaimed & made known.
That is Paul’s desire & request in the passage above & it is something we can be doing as a regular discipline & habit.
The purpose of the Church is to make known the mystery of the gospel to the principalities & powers (Ephesians 3:9-12).
That comes through prayer & it comes through proclamation alongside demonstrations of God’s power.
Our prayer life, in communion with the Spirit, is a constant activity. Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).
We pray as we prepare for battle & we pray as we engage in the battle.
History is shaped by the intercessors!!!
The great thing is that there is nowhere that prayer cannot reach or touch. That is why it carries so much potential & power.
Intercession is a mighty act of love. Christ’s sacrifice on Calvary was the greatest intercession ever (Isaiah 53:12).
Christ continues to intercede for us in heaven (Hebrews 7:25) & He intercedes through us via the indwelling Spirit (Romans 8:26-27).
How wonderful it is that we are covered in & saturated by intercessory prayer!!!
As Christ prays for us & through us & as we pray for one another we are strengthened in the battle.
They say an army marches on it’s stomach. Well, the Lord’s army marches on the love that springs from intercessory prayer.
Intercessory prayer is loving God & our neighbour whilst on our knees!!! SELAH
Intercessory prayer is a spiritual partnership between Jesus, the Holy Spirit & the believer.
There is power in agreement & that is why intercessory prayer carries such potential & power.
It is a most potent & powerful weapon that we yield in partnership with the Lord.
A significant & specific source of strength in the battle. Thank you, JESUS. Hallelujah!!
- Who or what has the Lord laid on my heart to pray for right now?
- In what ways am I engaging in or developing a ministry of intercession?
- Meditate upon the potential & power of intercessory prayer.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You are my strength & shield, my defence & my salvation,
That You call me to partner with You through prayer & intercession.
Jesus thank you that You interceded on Calvary for my salvation,
And that You intercede evermore for my sanctification,
Thank you that You are my great intercessor.
Holy Spirit teach & train me to see, hear, heed & to follow your lead,
To know the mind of Christ & to lay hold of Your heavenly perspective,
Lead & guide me in, & through, the battles of life,
Standing ceaselessly in intercession & prayer.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
