Heart of the Matter

The Lord was able to use Mary (the mother of Jesus) powerfully because she fully yielded her heart unto Him.
Mary humbled herself in submission & surrendered her heart & will unto the Lord’s plan & purpose.
As a result, Jesus the Saviour came to earth through the incarnation. Hallelujah!!
The submission & surrender of Mary’s heart paved the way for the saviour to come to amongst us.
Mary’s heart was also exercised pondering, treasuring & through the piercing of suffering.
We will consider each in turn over the remainder of this week.
Therefore, today our focus is the pondering of the heart.

But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:19

The events & emotions surrounding Jesus’ birth must have been such a whirlwind for the holy couple.
Mary kept & pondered all this in her heart.
Firstly, she kept them. She stored them up, treasured them & noted them intently.
She wasn’t going to miss them or what they meant. Her heart was on an active WATCH!!!
Mary intended to understand & discern all that the Lord was doing.
This was an ongoing activity & exercise of the heart.

Secondly Mary pondered all these events, sayings & happenings in her heart.
Mary prayed over them as she held them reverently in her heart.
She meditated & reflected upon what they might mean.
Mary sought the Lord to understand & discern all that it meant.
Her heart reached out to the Lord to process & be at peace about what her head was struggling with!!
Mary wondered about the wonders of God at work in, & through, her life
Pondering in our hearts can take us places where our heads just can’t go. SELAH
The prayerful, pondering heart is a powerful vessel for the Lord.

A pondering heart that is submitted unto the Lord is a very powerful thing.
We are informed that Solomon too pondered over many things (Ecclesiastes 12:9).
Through the wisdom God graced & gifted him with Solomon discovered & recorded vast amounts of knowledge, wisdom & understanding.
The heart pondering before the Lord gives us a godly perspective & brings meaning & focus to all that is happening to us.
A pondering heart helps & prepares us to fully embrace the word, will & way of the Lord. SELAH
Mary’s example shows us it is one of the ways through which we experience & encounter the Lord!!
Prayerfully ponder & wonder as you submit your heart unto the Lord. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • What is my heart pondering over right now?
  • What am I wondering about due to the wonders of God in, & through, my life?
  • Meditate upon the power of a pondering heart that is submitted unto the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You constantly speak into my life,
And that You are ever working your wonders in me & through me.
Jesus ever help me & always give me strength to walk humbly like You,
To hear & see all that the Father wants to do in & through me, & to respond in obedience.
Holy Spirit help me to prayerfully ponder all that the Lord is saying to me & doing in my life,
To experience & encounter the Lord in every area of my heart & life.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
