Heart of the Matter

Mary’s heart was exercised to ponder & treasure all the Lord was doing in her & her family.
Pondering & treasuring are good spiritual disciplines of the heart for us to practise too.
In addition, Mary also experienced a piercing of her heart.
Her tender heart was pierced with sorrow as she watched her son die a horrific death.
Therefore, today our focus will be the piercing of the heart that comes to us all too.

Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother,
“Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel,
and for a sign which will be spoken against (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” Luke 2:34-35

Simeon prophesied the piercing of Mary’s heart & soul.
This was ultimately fulfilled as Mary watched the son she loved suffer & die upon the cross (John 19:25).
Jesus side was pierced with a spear to confirm his death & Mary’s heart was pieced with grief too.
Sorrow overwhelmed her & suffering engulfed her as her heartbreak & pain deepened.
There were other sorrows & suffering along the way too.
The flight into Egypt (Matthew 2:13-14). Losing her child in Jerusalem (Luke 2:48).
Thinking Jesus had lost His mind (Mark 3:21). Taking down the body & burying it (John 19:38-42).
Mary proves to us that the heart gets pierced repeatedly with the sorrows & sufferings that are a part of this life.
No one of us is immune from this!!!

The piercing of the heart is something that we will all experience at some time.
It is the path of sorrow & suffering we must all tread at some point, & to differing degrees, in this life.
However, it is through suffering we lay hold of God’s glory (Romans 8:18).
That was the path of the Master Jesus & that is our path too.
We don’t seek out suffering but neither do we shy away from it.
We need not fear it & through faith we can walk through it. SELAH
That is the great encouragement of Romans 8. Through Christ we overcome.
The glorious thing about our Lord is that He suffered for us upon Calvary & He suffers with us now.

At various times in life each of us will experience a piercing of the heart in differing ways & degrees.
Loss of something valuable, death of a loved one, disappointment & failure to name but a few.
The encouragement for us is that God is the strengthener & comforter of our hearts (Psalm 73:26; 2 Corinthians 1:3).
The Lord will provide the grace (always more than enough) & strength we need at every point along the path.
He never leaves us or forsakes us (Hebrews 13:5). He walks with us & upholds us.
He is the helper, strengthener, comforter & healer of our hearts. Hallelujah!!
Our hearts are safe & stay whole & well with Him. Keep lifting your heart unto the Lord.

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I drawing strength & comfort from the Lord right now?
  • How has my heart been pierced in the journey that is life?
  • Meditate upon the piercing of the heart.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the strength of my heart,
That it is safe in Your loving embrace.
Jesus thank you that You poured out your heart for my salvation,
That you withheld nothing as You were pierced for my freedom & deliverance.
Holy Spirit keep me lifting my heart unto the Lord,
Drawing strength & comfort from my Rock & Strong Tower.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
