Who is the Greatest?

Alongside honouring the Lord & humility, living & walking in God’s truth are hallmarks of kingdom greatness.
Humility is not thinking less of yourself but rather thinking about yourself less & others more (putting others first).
Honour is giving the proper respect & truly valuing God & others.
Living & walking in the truth of God means obedience to His will, word & ways (hearing, heeding & doing).
We see yet another aspect of kingdom greatness in today’s scripture passage.

Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, “What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?” But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, “If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.” Then He took a little child and set him in the midst of them. And when He had taken him in His arms, He said to them, “Whoever receives one of these little children in My name receives Me; and whoever receives Me, receives not Me but Him who sent Me.” Mark 9:33-37

Jesus overheard His disciples debating & disputing among themselves who would be the greatest.
It must have been quite a heated discussion as it clearly turned into quite an argument.
Interesting to note though that when questioned about it they were silent!!
This is the point at which the acted parable with the little child was put into action.
True greatness springs forth from servanthood. Servanthood is bending low before others.
Our salvation was dependent upon it (Mark 10:45) & it is the way of the kingdom of God.

Jesus makes clear that taking the lowest & least position to serve others is a sign of kingdom greatness.
He takes the least (the child) & places it in the centre to powerfully illustrate the point.
To lay aside any self-importance for the good of others is what He is advocating.
Seeing the needs of others before our own needs & seeking to meet them through service.
That is the way of living in the kingdom & walking in greatness. That is way of Jesus, the Servant King.
In God’s kingdom we are servants before we are anything else. SELAH
Everything & anything of kingdom value flows forth from sacrificial service.
As for the Master so for the pupils & followers.

Jesus modelled servanthood (John 13:1-17) & it is the path His followers must tread.
True discipleship & true kingdom greatness are marked by servanthood.
Just like Jesus bent low to save us so we must bend low to serve others.
Honouring God, humility, living & walking in God’s truth & servanthood are the ways we follow our Servant King.
That is the way of true greatness, the narrow way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14).

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I serving God & others?
  • How willing am I to take up the lowest & least desirable roles & tasks?
  • Meditate upon servanthood in the context of greatness.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you for Your great love & care of me,
That You .
Jesus thank you that taught & modelled servanthood,
That as my Servant King you bent low to save me.
Holy Spirit give me strength & grace to keep serving,
Help me to keep bending low as I serve the Lord & others,
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
