Who was and is, and is, to come

The Lord our God exists eternally as Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
The Trinity who are three in one & one in three.
The apostle John highlights this in the introduction to his revelation.
We will see this in our focus for today.

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.
And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:4-8

This introduction from John is Trinitarian in form. It is a doxology exalting the Trinity & each person of the Godhead. John makes reference to our God and Father, Jesus Christ & the seven Spirits.
Here we have Father, Son & Holy Spirit – the Trinity working out TOGETHER the eternal purposes of the Lord God.
We will take some time over the next few days to look at the names & differing functions assigned to each.

The passage begins (v4) & ends (v8) with her phrase ‘who is, who was & who is to come’.
Here we have a Trinity sandwich. A rich outpouring of worship & praise to the Trinity & each person in it.
The filling of that sandwich outlines what the Son & the Spirit are doing in God’s eternal salvation plan.
Unsurprisingly it centres around the role & ministry of Jesus the Saviour.
The One in whom the eternal & ultimate victory over sin, death, Satan & evil was won. Hallelujah!!!

Amazingly, believers are the benefactors of all the salvation blessings the Godhead makes possible for man.
Throughout the Book of Revelation John will spell out how that salvation plan & purpose works out.
God wins & love wins the day through the great sacrifice of Christ upon the cross.
The glory & presence of God dwelling in the midst of His people eternally in the New Creation.
All things made new, & perfect forever. Hallelujah- glory be to God!!!
What a wonderful future & destiny awaits us. SELAH

For Reflection

  • How easily & fully do I exalt & praise each member of the Trinity?
  • How is my relationship with each person of the Trinity?
  • Meditate upon the Trinity, along with the nature & character of Father, Son & Spirit.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the One who is, who was & who is to come
The One who is worthy of our worship forever.
Jesus, thank you that You came once for salvation & that you will come again in judgement,
When the kingdoms of this world become the kingdoms of our Lord & His Christ.
Holy Spirit keep me enduring in the faith & persevering with God,
Working out my salvation with great reverence & full respect.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
