Who was and is and is to Come

The Lord who was & is & is to come forever dwells in a relationship of love as Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
John references the Trinity (who are three in one & one in three) in his introductory doxology in the book of Revelation.
He also uses a threefold formula (which he repeats twice over!!) to highlight the saving work of Jesus.
We will look at this as our focus for today.

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth.
To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.
And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.
“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord,
“who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:4-8

Jesus is introduced as Jesus Christ & is given three titles:

  • The faithful witness (earthly obedience Hebrews 5:8, present faithfulness to the 7 churches & future victory parade Revelation 19:11)
  • The firstborn form the dead (Christ’s resurrection is the first of many that will follow Romans 8:29; Colossians 1:15 & 18; Hebrews 2:10)
  • The ruler of over the kings of the earth (Christ’s eternal victory is a key theme of John Revelation 11:15, 19:16)

How awesome & amazing is our Saviour Jesus. SELAH

John then goes on to remind his readers how Jesus has:

  • Loved us (o what manner of love is this 1 John 3:1 that God would save humanity through His Son John 3:16)
  • Washed us from our sins in His blood (Christ became sin for us to set us free & gift us eternal life 2 Corinthians 5:21)
  • Made us kings & priests unto God (Jesus’s anointing & kingdom authority 1 Peter 2:9)

This saving work upon the cross is all to His praise & unto Him is due glory & dominion. SELAH

Christ has come once for salvation & He will come gain to fully consummate the Kingdom of God.
This time it will be eternal salvation for those who belong to Him but judgement for those who resist & reject Him (Hebrews 9:27-28).
John spells it out in 3 ways:

  • He is coming on the clouds to take up the Kingdom (cf Dan 7:13 as He left so He will return Acts 1:9)
  • All will see the One they pierced (the glorified risen Christ eternally carrying the marks of crucifixion for ALL to see)
  • Tribes of the earth will mourn as eternal judgement is passed (Revelation 20:11-15)

Christ is returning to fulfil what He always promised. Salvation to those who believe in & on Him.
They will reign with Him – the King of Kings & Lord of Lords – in glory forever & ever. |
O what a wonderful future & destiny awaits the faithful believer. SELAH
Lord God, Father, Son & Spirit, we gladly bow the knee to You alone. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • Am I standing strong in the faith, rooted & grounded ‘In Christ’?
  • What do I have in place in my life to help me persevere with God & endure in my salvation?
  • Meditate upon the past, present & future saving work of Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the just judge of all the earth,
The One whose judgements will stand eternally.
Jesus, thank you that You are the Faithful One & the eternal Saviour,
The Lion & the Lamb whose judgements are just & true.
Holy Spirit keep me steadfast & standing firm in my faith,
Looking unto & following Jesus my faithful Good Shepherd.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
