Who was, and is, and is, to Come!

John introduces the Trinity in his doxology within Revelation chapter 1.
It is from the Three in One & One in Three that grace & peace freely flows to the Church.
Interesting to see & note the order in which John places the names.
The Trinity is usually expressed as Father, Son & Holy Spirit.
However, here John introduces them as Father, Spirit & Son.
The possible why will be our focus for today.

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. Revelation 1:4-5

John’s vision carried Him (in the Spirit) into the Heavenly sanctuary & throne room.
The Jewish Tabernacle, & then later the Temple, were only ever earthly shadows & representations of this (Hebrews 8:5).
In John’s heavenly vision & revelation we see the Spirit ministering before the throne.
The Spirit is ever aware of the deep things, truths & plans of God (1 Corinthians 2:10).
After the Spirit is mentioned, we then hear of Jesus Christ the Son, followed by all He accomplished on behalf of believers.
The movement is from Father to Spirit to Son.

This movement depicts the earthly reality of the Tabernacle & Temple.
The Father abiding above the Ark of the Covenant on the Mercy Seat in the Holy of Holies.
The Spirit is represented in the Holy Place by the lampstand (the seven-branched Menorah).
The Priests (Jesus being our Great High Priest) minister at the altar in the court offering sacrifices. SELAH
A beautiful picture with rich imagery showing the Trinity bringing about the work of redemption. Hallelujah!!

The One who is and who was & who is to come is the Father, Son & Spirit.
The Father revealed by the Spirit through the Son’s redeeming sacrifice.
The earthly Tabernacle & Temple was subject to strict limitations & restrictions (to both person & place).
In the heavenly sanctuary & throne room there are none. Open access to the glorious presence of the Lord.
Jesus Christ through His redeeming sacrifice has forever opened a new & living way (Hebrews 10:20). Hallelujah!!
That is why grace & peace can forever flow freely to the believer.
That is why we can approach & enter the Lord’s presence BOLDLY at any time & in any place (Hebrews 4:16).
So, So Good. SELAH

For Reflection

  • In what ways do I give thanks & praise for all the Lord has done for me?
  • Am I bold & confident to enter the presence of the Lord?
  • Meditate upon the redeeming work of the Trinity.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that from Your presence flows endless grace & peace,
Freely & forever to me Your beloved treasured child.
Jesus thank you that through your death & resurrection my redemption was secured,
That I can now with boldness & confidence, at any time, approach the throne of grace.
Holy Spirit keep revealing to me the deep things of God,
Help me to fully lay hold of all that that has freely been given to me by the Lord.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
