Who was, and is, and is, to Come

John poignantly & powerfully references the Trinity in the doxology from Revelation chapter 1 that we have been exploring.
We have explored some of the terms & titles that relate to both Jesus & the Holy Spirit.
We have also noted that Jesus & the Spirit are the filling of a Father sandwich. Jesus being the main filling!!
The names that relate to the Father will be our focus for today.

Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, ………………. “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” Revelation 1:4 & 8

John uses a unique name for the Father – the One who is and who was and who is to come.
Alongside that John also references the Father as the Alpha & the Omega, The Beginning & the End.
Finally, the last phrases used are the Lord & the Almighty.
Interesting to note the use of the term I AM. This would have huge significance to Jewish readers.
The all-sufficient, all-powerful God of creation & redemption – I am who I Am (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58).

The unique name John uses (who was, who is & who is to come) is only used here & in Revelation 4:8, 11:17 & 16:5.
It is generally understood by scholars as a paraphrase of the divine name YHWH used in the Old Testament (see Isaiah 41:4).
Alpha & Omega, Beginning & the End are only used here & in Revelation 22:13.
The One who holds all things together & will come again to fully share his glory with His people. So, so good.
Many rulers claim the name & title lord but this is the ultimate & only Lord God Almighty – the one who tempers His power with love.
John is introducing the Eternal God, full of power & creative might who Covenants with His people through the Son by the Spirit.
He is ever with & for His people as their power & strength – sustaining, comforting & encouraging them through all things.
The One who always sends grace & peace to His people (verse 4). Hallelujah!! SELAH

The Father brings about His eternal salvation purposes through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit.
The Godhead working in unity through unending & eternal reciprocal love.
We are invited, through the death & resurrection of Christ, to join their unceasing dance. Hallelujah!!!
What an awesome privilege & what a great responsibility. SELAH

For Reflection

  • In what ways do I know that God is ever present with me?
  • How has the Lord encouraged me today & this week?
  • Meditate upon our Almighty Eternal Lord who was, and is, and is to come.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are the Eternal Lord God Almighty,
The Creator & Redeemer of all things – including me!!
Jesus thank you that through your death & resurrection my relationship with Father God is restored,
That I can know His presence ever with me & for me.
Holy Spirit teach me to dance to the beat of the Lord’s heart,
And to stay in step with all that the Godhead is doing.
Help me to hear, heed, respond & obey You.
This I ask In Jesus mighty Name.
