Holy, Holy, Holy

The Apostle John sees into heaven’s throne room where the 4 living creatures are worshipping the Most High God who is holy, holy, holy.
They are lost in ceaseless adoring worship of the superlative holiness & majesty of the One True God.
These living creatures are mentioned around 20 times in the book of Revelation.
It is as if they are angelic ambassadors representing all created life before the Lord who is both creator & redeemer.
We will think a little more about these powerful & instrumental angelic beings today.

The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within.
And they do not rest day or night, saying:
“Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,
Who was and is and is to come!” Revelation 4:8

The intimate adoring cry of the living creatures is holy, holy, holy as they bow before the Lord in endless praise & worship.
They are the innermost circle of 4 circles of worship in Revelation – living creatures, elders, angels & creation.
They also hold harps together with golden bowls which are filled with the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8).
How wonderful to know our prayers are beautifully presented before God’s throne in the midst of unceasing worship.
Our prayers ascend unto the Lord’s throne & they are precious to Him. SELAH
Prayer & praise are both powerful & they are to be used in conjunction in our worship.

The 4 living creatures are full of & covered with eyes – piercing insight & intimate knowledge of the Lord Most High.
They each have 4 faces – lion, man, ox & eagle. Each representing something important.
The lion is a symbol of power & authority. Jesus is the Lion of the tribe of Judah who brings the kingdom in all its fullness.
The man speaks of Christ’s humanity & reminds us that we are all made in the ‘image of God’.
The ox is a symbol of service & sacrifice. Christ the one who came to serve & give His life as a ransom for many.
The eagle a symbol of deity & justice. God the Most High is the God of Justice & the just judge of all the earth.
These also correspond to the standards (flags) of the leader tribes in Israel – lion (Judah), man (Reuben), ox (Ephraim) & eagle (Dan).

Alongside a key role in the worship of heaven these powerful angels are also instrumental in administering the Lord’s justice.
They play a part in the governance of heaven & the unfolding of the Lord’s plans & purposes.
They are present when the Lord’s perfect & eternal justice is being worked out (Revelation 6:1-8, 15:7).
They are active in applying the Lord’s justice but far more active in worship.
Incredibly we are assisted by these amazing angels in the throne room of heaven.
They present our prayers unto the Lord & are ever working for the Lord’s justice upon this earth.
What can we do but join in with their ceaseless worship & join the endless cry Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord.
Worship the Lord, witness for Him & never tire of working to see His justice upon this earth. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I combing prayer & praise in my times of devotion?
  • Do I appreciate the assistance & help (often unseen) of the angels?
  • Meditate upon the superlative holiness & perfect justice of the Lord Most high who is holy, holy, holy..

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are superlative in holiness,
And as judge of all perfect in justice.
Jesus thank you that You are the Lion of Judah & Lamb of God,
My saviour forever & my eternal King,
Holy Spirit keep me praying & praising,
And ever seeking & tirelessly working for the Lord’s justice upon this earth.
In Jesus mighty Name.
