Biblical Roads & Paths

Every one of us is familiar with walking or travelling along paths & roads. We do this daily in life. In similar manner there are spiritual paths & roads that we are navigating daily. We have seen how the Roman Road of Salvation leads us to Jesus. Once we find Christ, we tread the narrow way of salvation (Matthew 7:13-14) which leads us onto the Highway of Holiness (Isaiah 35:8-10). On this road we are walking in the way of Christ who Himself is the way, the truth & the Life (John 14:6). The Lord is before us, all around us & our rearguard. How amazing is that!!

Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21

The Lord is behind us as our rearguard constantly instructing us about the direction of travel. He is ever speaking unto us to keep us in His will & ways & on His straight paths (Proverbs 3:5-6). The Lord is forever telling us the way. It is both a direction & a person – the Lord Jesus Christ. Interesting that in the early days of Christianity it was called The Way (Acts 9:2). The Lord speaks direction from our rear & we must be vigilant, alert & attentive to listen for, hear & head the directions He gives to us. SELAH

For you shall not go out with haste,
Nor go by flight;
For the LORD will go before you,
And the God of Israel will be your rear guard. Isaiah 52:12

Amazingly, at the same time the Lord is bringing up our rearguard He is at the same time going before us (Deuteronomy 1:30, Isaiah 45:2)!! The Lord is before & behind us. The Lord leads His people onward & he watches over them constantly. We are forever surrounded by His presence, protection, provision & peace. His goodness & mercy follows (runs after) us (Psalm 23:6). What a wonderful way to travel. Safe & secure with the Lord as our guide & guard. SELAH

Note too, the wonderfully comforting words of Jesus. He is the Good Shepherd who leads out His flock. His sheep hear His voice & follow Him (John 10:7, 11, 27-28). Again listening, hearing & heading the voice of Jesus is the key. In summary, the Godhead – Father, Son & Spirit – are accompanying us as we travel, traverse & navigate along the paths of life. So good that there is a voice out front calling us onward & a voice behind offering constant counsel. The Lord calls from out front & He counsels from behind. So encouraging & so reassuring. Thank you Lord, lead me on.

As the German theologian & Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer said – May God lead us kindly through these times, but above all, may God lead us to Himself. Hallelujah!! Keep walking with the Lord.

For Reflection

  • How well am I hearing the voice of the Lord right now?
  • Am I feeling safe & secure on the roads that I am currently navigating?
  • Meditate upon the way we are guided & guarded as we walk & journey with the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that I am surrounded by You,
That you go before me & bring up my rear-guard.
Jesus thank you that You are my Good Shepherd,
Lead me on the straight paths of life that lead to You.
Holy Spirit keep me hearing & heading the voice of the Lord,
Responding readily to both His call & His counsel.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
