Biblical Roads & Paths
Every single day in our lives we walk along different roads & paths both in the natural world & spiritually. We have seen the narrow way that leads to life ‘in Christ’ (Matthew 7:13-14) & the Roman Road to Salvation outlined by Paul in his letter to the church in Rome. Once we have experienced salvation we journey with Jesus on a different track. We follow His lead along the Highway of Holiness. This leads us into our destiny & glorious future.
A highway shall be there, and a road,
And it shall be called the Highway of Holiness.
The unclean shall not pass over it,
But it shall be for others.
Whoever walks the road, although a fool,
Shall not go astray.
No lion shall be there,
Nor shall any ravenous beast go up on it;
It shall not be found there.
But the redeemed shall walk there,
And the ransomed of the LORD shall return,
And come to Zion with singing,
With everlasting joy on their heads.
They shall obtain joy and gladness,
And sorrow and sighing shall flee away.
This superhighway is prophesied by the great Old Testament prophet Isaiah. It was initially an encouragement to the exiled people of Israel that they would return to their homeland – the promised land. In that sense it has come true but what is portrayed here carries so much more that is still to come. It is also a prophecy about returning to an eternal homeland in God’s New Creation. How wonderful is that!!!
That eternal homeland where there is joyful singing alongside everlasting gladness, instead of constant sorrow & signing, is where the people of God are heading. We are pilgrims, passing through this life on earth & heading for our eternal destiny in the Lord’s new heaven & earth. It is the redeemed & ransomed of the Lord – those rescued by Christ’s saving work – that walk this path. Our citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20) & we are looking for a better country (Hebrews 11:16). This is that desired for & sought after eternal habitation. Jesus is leading us to our eternal home. A place of complete healing, wholeness & perfect SHALOM. Hallelujah!!!
Note though that it is a highway of holiness. No unclean thing shall travel upon it. How we live matters & we are called to follow in the ways of our Lord & Master, Jesus Christ. He is holy & He calls us to holiness too. Thankfully & wonderfully God has provided all we need for life & godliness (1 Peter 1:13-19; 2 Peter 1:2-4). As we walk in obedience to Scripture & the Spirit we will continue to travel this holy highway. SELAH
As we are led by Jesus and assisted by Scripture & the Spirit we shall not be led astray. There is safety & security, provision & protection in all 3 of our guides. They are each far more reliable & trustworthy than the most detailed map or accurate sat nav. Hallelujah!! What a wonderful destiny & future awaits us. All provided by our Heavenly Father through the ultimate & eternal sacrifice of the Son. O what a mighty salvation!!
Keep walking in the Lord’s love, light & life as you journey with Jesus along the highway of holiness. Let those songs & celebrations keep ringing out!!
- In what ways am I seeking to live a godly & holy life?
- How mindful am I that I am a pilgrim temporarily passing through this current world? How does this touch & transform my life?
- Meditate upon the Highway to Holiness & our eternal destiny ‘In Christ’.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that ‘In Christ’ You are making ALL things new,
That you have prepared a New Creation- a new heaven & earth – for Your people.
Jesus thank you that You hold my eternal destiny in Your hand,
Keep me attentive to Your voice & following closely after You.
Holy Spirit keep me living in a godly manner & pursuing holiness,
Attentive to You, the Word of God & the Lord’s still small voice.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
