Christian Relationships

Paul’s letter to the Philippians highlights differing dynamics of our Christian relationships.
We have seen how Epaphroditus was Paul’s brother & also his fellow worker.
As well as being a companion, a co-worker & a comrade Epaphroditus was also a brother & comrade in arms.
He was a fellow soldier in the Lord’s army. This will be our focus today.

I think I ought to send my dear friend Epaphroditus back to you.
He is a follower and a worker and a soldier of the Lord, just as I am.
You sent him to look after me. Phillippians 2:25 Contemporary English Version

Paul & Epahroditus had shared life & work together in the Lord – siblings & servants.
They also shared the challenge of proclaiming & spreading the gospel together.
As they stood for God’s truth & exercised faith they engaged in the spiritual battle.
Soldiers together fighting the good fight (1 Timothy 6:12) in the service of the Lord.
In & through the strength that Christ supplies overcoming the world, the flesh & the devil.
Soldiers standing shoulder to shoulder as they contended for the faith (Ephesians 6:10-20).

We are getting an increasing picture & revelation of how these 2 men were bonded at differing levels.
Paul & Epaphroditus would have faced the dangers (physical & spiritual) of battle together.
Planning together, praying together, praising together & proclaiming the gospel together.
Mutually supporting & encouraging one another. Sharpening & strengthening one another in the Lord (Proverbs 27:17).
This is how those we live, work & fight alongside shape & mould us in our Christian life & journey. SELAH

In the midst of the battle & fight they were equipped & empowered by the Lord.
Standing firm in the power of His might. Standing firm & staying firm (Ephesians 6:10 & 13).
A soldier needs discipline, diligence, dedication & attention to detail. Following orders is absolutely key.
All of these are important dynamics & dimensions of our Christian lives. SELAH.
We are all soldiers in the battle that is life & our very lives are a battleground.
There is also the battleground of the gospel & the kingdom moving forward.
Stand shoulder to shoulder with your fellow soldiers in the Lord’s army.
Keep fighting the good fight & laying hold of eternal life. Hallelujah!!!

For Reflection

  • Who has helped & been instrumental to shape & mould me in my Christian pilgrimage?
  • What challenges or dangers am I facing in the spiritual battle right now?
  • Meditate upon what it means to be fellow soldiers in the Lord’s army.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You enlist me as a soldier in Your army,
Give me daily strength to keep standing firm in Your might.
Jesus thank you that the victory is in You,
Keep me fighting the good fight in the strength You supply.
Holy Spirit give me grace to obey the Lord willingly & readily,
Grant unto me the discipline, diligence, dedication & attention to detail I need to serve You faithfully &
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
