Christian Relationships

Paul commends & champions both Timothy & Epaphroditus in his letter to the Philippian church.
He encourages the Philippian church to take joy in & highly esteem Epaphroditus (Philippians 2:28-29).
Both Paul & his home church delighted in him as he was dear to their hearts.
David, Israel’s greatest King, experienced & expressed a similar principle which we will look at today.

Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust.
O my soul, you have said to the Lord,
“You are my Lord,
My goodness is nothing apart from You.”
As for the saints who are on the earth,
“They are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.” Psalm 16:1-3 NKJV

David makes the point of noting the excellence of his fellow saints (verse 3).
He delights in them & takes joy in their friendship & fellowship.
Fully accepting & appreciating those who worshipped the Lord alongside him.
The community of the saints is a source of constant company, companionship & communion.
Saints (siblings) standing strong & supporting one another is the community in which we are to worship & witness together.
Sharing life & embarking on mission as family TOGETHER. SELAH

Paul delighted in both Epaphroditus & the Philippian church (Philippians 2:25-30). They were dear to him & a source of joy.
Paul champions Epaphroditus cause & exhorts that he should be held in high esteem.
Epaphroditus’ motivation was to serve Christ but he had excelled in this through distinguished & dedicated service.
It had nearly cost Epaphroditus his life & Paul was keen to make sure his valued fellow worker was rightly regarded & respected.
It is good & proper to value, esteem & rightly honour one another in the Lord.
How different our churches & Christian communities might be if we were truly committed to this principle. SELAH

As beloved children of the Lord we are united ‘In Christ’ as a part of the body of Christ & family of God.
We are called to love, support, serve & bless our fellow sibling & saints through a culture of mutual respect & honour.
Championing one another in the cause of Christ. Fully accepting one another & appreciating the differing gifts & ministries we bring.
Delighting ourselves in the Lord & delighting ourselves in one another is a true & full expression of the communion of the saints. SELAH
Think & meditate upon how counter-cultural & attractive to non-believers that would be.
As Jesus taught us the world will know we are His disciples when we truly love one another (John 13:35).
Lord, teach us to love You more dearly & also to love one another more deeply.

For Reflection

  • How am I delighting myself in my fellow siblings & saints in the Lord’s family?
  • What am I doing to overcome & reconcile the differences & disagreements I find within the body of Christ?
  • Meditate upon what it means to champion the cause of others in the body of Christ.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me into your family & the body of Christ,
Give me grace & strength to truly & fully accept, appreciate & delight in my brethren ‘In Christ’.
Jesus thank you that You are my brother & greatest most faithful friend,
Enable & empower me to stand alongside & support my Christian brother & sisters.
Holy Spirit help me to see & champion the gifts & ministries of my fellow workers in Your kingdom,
Rightly recognising & honouring their service to You & others.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
Amen
