Devote yourselves

There are several places in Scripture where The Lord’s people are exhorted to devote themselves to something.
God, prayer, one another, Scripture, Apostolic doctrine, breaking of bread & Christian fellowship spring to mind.
We will take a look at each of these in turn over the coming days.
Chief of these is to devote ourselves wholly unto the Lord.  This will be our focus for today.

Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.” 1 Kings 8:61 NASB

As Israel celebrated the Ark of God (God’s presence) being brought into the temple King Solomon exhorts & encourages the people of God to be wholly devoted to the Lord.
They are to wholeheartedly serve the Lord & make sure that they walk in obedience to His word, will & ways.
Obedience in the present & obedience moving forwards into their future. Obedience is what truly blesses & pleases the Lord (1 Samuel 15:22)!!
The words used for devoted here in the differing Bible translations are wholly devoted, wholly true, perfect, loyal, fully committed & completely faithful.
Challenging stuff – it rolls off the tongue so easily & reads impressively but is hard to put into daily practice!! SELAH

To devote yourself to is defined as the giving of all your energy, time & attention to something or someone.
It is a passionate act that consumes a person. This is what we are called unto as we follow the Lord.
Jesus himself said that we could only devote ourselves unto one master (Matthew 6:24).
The challenge for each one of us is who will be our Lord & Master. Will it be the Lord or someone or something else?
That is the daily challenge we face as ‘myriad things’ seek the attention & affection of our hearts as they compete for our worship.
The key is to daily unite our hearts with the Lord through continuing faith in Christ the Saviour.

Devoting ourselves unto, & delighting ourselves in, the Lord is the daily task set before us.
Loving the Lord with all our hearts & faithfully walking in & following His commandments.
Living in obedience to Scripture & the Spirit as we hear, heed & follow the still small voice.
Lord graciously grant unto me an undivided heart (Psalm 86:11). Teach me Your way o Lord (Psalm 119:33).

For Reflection

  • How am I delighting myself in the Lord & am I truly devoted to Him?
  • What am I doing to hear, heed & obey the voice & commandments of the Lord?
  • Meditate upon what it means to devote oneself unto the Lord.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me wholly unto Yourself,
Give me an undivided heart that unites with Yours.
Jesus thank you that You are the completely faithful servant & saviour,
Give me strength to daily hear, heed & follow you.
Holy Spirit keep me looking unto & walking in obedience to the Lord,
Amidst the myriad of distractions & temptations in this life.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
