Devote yourselves

Christians are encouraged to devote themselves to several things in the Bible.
First & foremost the Lord himself but also prayer, one another, Scripture, Apostolic doctrine, the breaking of bread & fellowship.
We have seen how a life devoted to prayer is beneficial to the believer.
Devoting ourselves to one another will be our focus for today.

Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honour, Romans 12:10 NASB

As children of God we are called into His family & the community of Christ.
Those family ties mean that we have responsibilities to our fellow family members.
We are to devote ourselves to them in brotherly love. To cherish one another with genuine affection.
This is a special term used by Paul to denote the mutual love shared within a family.
We honour the Lord when we love & honour our Christian brethren in the right & proper way.
Recognising, respecting & celebrating the Lord’s transforming work in one another.

Devoting ourselves to one another is more than just meeting together & sharing worship & fellowshipping together.
Paul is taking about genuine & tender affection here. Brotherly love with kind considerate care for one another.
Taking delight in respecting & honouring others above ourselves. Admiration alongside appreciation.
This takes real love & it takes genuine humility. You & we before me, time after time!!! SELAH

The sacrificial love of God demonstrated by Jesus is the model for how we are to treat one another as Christian brethren.
Each of us is precious to the Lord & equally loved & valued. We are to take the lead in honouring one another.
Paul is outlining the foundation for a strong, united, loving community reflecting the teachings of Jesus & the Father’s great love.
Self-sacrifice & selflessness are particularly important as like the Trinity we seek to outdo one another in love.
If we truly love the Lord we will genuinely love one another too (John 13:34,15:12; 1 John 4:19-21).
This is the hallmark & distinctive of a genuine Christian community. SELAH
What a wonderfully attractive family & community this promises to be. Lord help us make it a reality.

  • How am I seeking to show affection, appreciation & honour to my brothers & sisters in Christ?
  • In what ways do I feel loved & honoured by my Christian brethren?
  • Meditate upon what it means to devote ourselves to one another in the Lord’s family.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me wholly unto Yourself,
And into Your family, the Church & Body of Christ.
Jesus thank you that through the cross You modelled sacrificial, selfless love,
Help me to love like You loved & to rightly respect & honour my fellow believers.
Holy Spirit fill my heart with deep love & genuine affection for my brethren ‘In Christ’,
Give me the grace & humility to truly admire & fully appreciate my Christian brothers & sisters.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
