Devote yourselves

As the Lord’s people we are to wholly devote ourselves unto Him. He is to take first place in all things.
The Bible also exhorts us to devote ourselves to prayer, one another, Scripture, Apostolic doctrine, the breaking of bread & fellowship.
Prayer is one of the main ways that we communicate with & commune (spend time) with the Lord.
Devoting ourselves to prayer will be our focus for today.

Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; Colossians 4:2 NASB

Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, 1 Corinthians 7:5a NASB

As individuals, married couples & as a community of believers the Scriptural instruction is to devote ourselves to prayer.
Prayer is the very breath & lifeblood of the believer. It is essential to the continuance & development of our spiritual life with Christ.
It keeps us connected to, communicating with & communing with the Lord. It brings us into His presence.
Without prayer we go nowhere & we must combine our prayers with practical action. SELAH

Devoting ourselves to prayer means diligently & earnestly continuing in it whilst passionately persisting with it.
We do this attentively, alertly being vigilant, watchful & focused.
These are the disciplines we must bring to prayer on a daily basis.
Watching & focusing on what the Lord is doing so that we can join in.
Being aware & attentive to what is happening in the world so that we can pray & intercede accordingly.
Prayer takes time & it takes effort but disciple & dedication in it carry inherent rewards. SELAH
Interesting the note to married couples to be disciplined & diligent to set aside time for prayer.
It is good to be caught up & captivated with one another but far more important to be caught up & captivated by the Lord!!

We are to clothe & cloak our prayers in thankfulness. The attitude of gratitude.
We have so much to be thankful to the Lord for. Thank you is always a great prayer!!
We can constantly give thanks for our salvation alongside the daily blessings of His protection, provision & providence.
Prayer is one of the chief means through which we sustain, strengthen & grow our faith.
Prayer carries power & always makes a difference (James 5:16, 1 Peter 3:12). It changes us & it changes things.
That is why it is so vital & something we are to continually devote ourselves to.
Just do it – continually!!! Lord, teach me to pray more effectively (Luke 11:1).

For Reflection

  • How am I engaging in prayer individually & with other Christians?
  • What am I feeling deeply burdened about in prayer & intercession in this season?
  • Meditate upon what it means to devote oneself unto prayer.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You call me wholly unto Yourself,
And that I can come daily into Your presence through prayer.
Jesus thank you that modelled & teach us how to pray.
Give me strength & stamina to persist & prevail in prayer.
Holy Spirit keep me thankful, watchful, focused & vigilant in prayer,
In my prayer & intercession help me to establish disciplined & dedicated rhythms & patterns.
This I ask in Jesus mighty Name.
