Give me oil in my lamp

Oil is one of the symbols associated with the Holy Spirit in the Scriptures.
Oil was used to anoint the kings of Israel – they were anointed to serve as leaders of God’s people.
It was also stored in jars (clay pots). Thirdly it was used to fill & light lamps.
A brief look at all 3 of these functions will be our focus for today.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Matthew 5:14-16 NKJV

Every believer is anointed by the Holy Spirit. Absolutely every Christian – without question.
We are clothed & covered with the anointing of Jesus (Galatians 3:26-27).
We have an anointing from the Holy one that teaches is all things(1 John 2:20). How good is that.
We are anointed in & by the Holy Spirit to continue the mission of Jesus to this world.
To make king Jesus known & seek & bring the kingdom.

Oil was stored in clay jars & in scripture we are referred to as jars of clay too.
We have treasure in these jars of clay – our physical bodies (2 Corinthians 4:7).
That treasure is the life of Christ & the anointing of the Spirit who dwells within us.
Like jars we are to be filled up until we overflow. Be filled, & keep being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).
It is a perpetual flow of being filled & overflowing. That is the Father’s desire & plan for us.
So, So good. SELAH.

Oil was the fuel for small clay lamps in Biblical times. This type of lamp still exist today.
Through the oil of the Spirit we are to be lamps & lights for the Lord.
Walking in the light (Ephesians 5:8-10) & shining as lights in this dark world (Philippians 2:15).
Through Christ the Light of the World & the power of the Holy Spirit we are to shine so that people will glorify God.
SHINING from the inside out!! Give me oil for my lamp Lord. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I shining as a lamp & light for Jesus?
  • How am I maintaining my supply of oil?
  • Meditate upon the Holy Spirits’ oil & anointing.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are light, life & love,
Keep me walking in Your light, living in Your love, & making known Your life.
Jesus thank you that You are the Light of the World,
May the beauty of Your love & grace shine forth through my life.
Holy Spirit fill me with your anointing oil & keep filling me to overflowing,
Flow through me to touch & transform people & places.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
