The Testimony of Jesus

John talks about the tribulation, kingdom & patience of Jesus Christ in writing Revelation.
The Kingdom came through the incarnation (birth) & intercession (cross & resurrection) of Christ & it is still coming.
We have noted how each & every believer will face tribulation as they seek the Kingdom of God in this life.
Life will therefore be a mix of successes mingled with suffering, pain & loss whilst we live in the overlap of the ages.
This being the case John exhorts his readers to take up the patience of Jesus Christ. That will be our focus for today.

I, John, am your brother and your partner in suffering and in God’s Kingdom and in the patient endurance to which Jesus calls us. I was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the word of God and for my testimony about Jesus. Revelation 1:9 NLT

God’s Kingdom was launched through the earthly ministry of Jesus – His life, death & resurrection.
It has come, it is coming & it is yet to come in all it’s fulness. This will happen when Christ returns.
That is why we need to patiently endure. He who endures to the end will be saved (Matthew 10:22, 24:13).
At the current time we have to patiently persevere through suffering & pain. Just like John was doing on Patmos.
We endure until the end when God’s perfection will come. All will be made new (Revelation 21:1-3).

Patient perseverance as we seek the Kingdom is the mark of Christ’s kingship on & over our lives.
Such endurance leads to conflict with the powers of this world. We are ever in the midst of spiritual battle.
Patience is a virtue & it is doesn’t always come easily – especially in the midst of tribulation or trouble!!
Thankfully, & wonderfully it is part of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). A great gift from the Lord.
God as ever provides us with each & every spiritual resource & source of strength we need. So, so good.

Patience & perseverance gives strength to the great hope we have ‘In Christ’.
It develops resilience & a humble resolve to keep on, keeping on. Just what we need.
This patient endurance & perseverance is a repeated theme of the NT Scriptures.
Through patient endurance we keep doing God’s will so that in due course we will inherit all His promises (Hebrews 10:36).
It is the call & challenge to both intimacy & inheritance with the Lord. SELAH Deeper In & further on. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • In what ways am I persevering as I seek first the Kingdom of God?
  • How easy do I find it to be patient? What, or who, tries my patience the most?
  • Meditate upon the need for patient endurance in the Christian life.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You are making all things new in & through The Lord Jesus Christ,
Give me strength to patiently endure until the end.
Jesus thank you that You conceived & will consummate the Kingdom of God,
That in & through You it will come fully upon this earth.
Holy Spirit give me the patience that freely flows from You,
May it fruit bountifully in my life as You equip & empower me to keep on fighting the good fight.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
