Train your Spiritual Senses

As Christians we are to use our spiritual senses as well as our physical ones.
Ezekiel, along with many of the other Old Testament prophets, is a good example of this.
Through him we have noted that in the Spirit we need to pay attention, look carefully & listen closely.
We have seen how paying attention is primarily a matter of the heart.
Lifting it fully unto the Lord – attentive, awake, aware & alert.
Today we will think more around what it means to look carefully.

The Lord said to me, “Son of man, look carefully, listen closely and give attention to everything I tell you concerning all the regulations and instructions regarding the temple of the Lord. Give attention to the entrance to the temple and all the exits of the sanctuary. Ezekiel 44:5 NIV

After setting his heart (mark well), the second instruction to Ezekiel is to look carefully.
He is to set his gaze & use his spiritual vision. Exercising his eyes & sight in the realm of the Spirit.
The word used carries the thought of beholding, inspecting, observing, discerning, perceiving & considering.
It is a careful, detailed & thorough examination of what is being shown & revealed.
The Lord shows us things that we can see in the Spirit. SELAH

There are many examples of this in the Scriptures (e.g. Elisha & his servant, Daniel’s visions, Paul’s visions & revelations, John’s Revelation).
The Lord will at times ask the question of His servants what do you see? (Jeremiah 1:11 & 13, 24:3; Amos 7:8 & 8:2; Zechariah 4:2 & 5:2)
We see OT prophets looking & particularly looking up – gazing heavenward & unto the Lord (Ezekiel 1:27, 8:2, Zechariah 1:18,2:1, 5:9 & 6:1).
If we don’t look, we will not see!!! If we do gaze then the Lord’s visions & revelation will come to us.
It is all about altering & changing our perspective. Seeing as the Lord sees. Getting heavenly revelation & perspective.

God has given us a hearing ear & a seeing eye in both the physical & spiritual realm. They are to be used.
They are for ALL God’s people to use & exercise rather than just being for a special or privileged few.
Immobility & disuse are silent killers. If we don’t use it we will lose it. SELAH
It is so important we use the gifts the Lord has graciously given to us.
Strengthening & sharpening them through repeated & regular use. Practice makes perfect.
The Lord deeply desires to keep revealing His great plans & purposes to us (1 Corinthians 2:9-10).
They are revealed in the Spirit through the eyes of the heart; the inner eye of the spiritual man.
Look & you will see. Lord open our EYES (Psalm 119:18; Ephesians 1:18). Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How effective is my spiritual eyesight? Do I need an eye test?
  • In what ways am I intentionally paying attention to the Lord through my spiritual senses? How am I investing?
  • Meditate upon how & why we need to be watch & look spiritually.

A song related to this theme:

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You desire to reveal Your plans & purposes to me,
And that You have graciously gifted me spiritual eyes to see this.
Jesus open my eyes to see as You see,
Strengthen & sharpen my spiritual vision.
Holy Spirit help me to fix & focus my gaze fully & firmly upon the Lord,
Keep my looking up & seeking heavenly understanding & perception.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
Amen
