Tidings of comfort and Joy
Miracle for a Maiden
To take full advantage of the tidings of comfort & joy available through Christ the saviour we must respond to God’s initiative & invitation.
He asks us to yield our lives & hearts like Mary, be fully obedient like the shepherds & surrender in worship like the wise men.
That is the good news of the incarnation – God with us in Christ. God within us through new birth ‘In Christ’.
Today we will think how God came to dwell amongst us. The incarnation took place through a miracle for a maiden.
Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus.
He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David.
And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
Luke 1:30-33 NKJV
Through the miracle of the incarnation God became fully man.
This was announced by a mighty angel much to Mary’s surprise & shock.
Mary was to be miraculously overshadowed by the Holy Spirit to conceive the Holy infant – Jesus.
Amazingly God fully surrendered himself to the vulnerability of a teenager’s womb. SELAH
This was not just going to be a son but the Son of God, & also the eternal Ruler & King.
A wonderful gift to a highly favoured maiden but wow what a lot to take in & take on board!!
Life was certainly never going to be the same again.
This miracle carried consequences (public disgrace) & would be costly (personal sorrow)!!
Mary, quite understandably, questioned how this could be since she was still a virgin.
The angel reassured her that it would come to be through the power & presence of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Seed, who would be the promised Son & Saviour, miraculously conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Reassurance and encouragement came through the news that Elizabeth (Luke 1:36).
Mary was then convinced & content to submit herself fully to be an instrument & channel for the Lord (Luke 1:38).
Let it be to me according to Your word is always a good response to the Lord. SELAH
It can take time, & some processing, but our yes to God’s plans & purposes in our lives is crucially important.
The angel also reassured Mary that God’s word & promise carried power & that God would fulfil it.
No word of God ever lacks power to succeed or will fail to achieve that for which it is sent forth (Luke 1:37; Isaiah 55:11).
God can do things that are humanly impossible. He is, & ever will be, a miracle working God.
This was an extraordinary miracle, but we are forever surrounded by everyday miracles. SELAH
Our God remains a miracle working God to this day – in this regard He doesn’t change (Hebrews 13:8).
Like Mary, no promise or word the Lord has spoken to us lacks the power to succeed.
Keep holding onto God’s promises, keep actively waiting on them & stay expectant through faith.
Every promise of God is yes & amen in Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 1:20). Amen to that. Hallelujah!!
- What might God be wanting to conceive & birth in your life or through your ministry?
- What words or promises from God are you waiting upon?
- Meditate upon the miracle of the incarnation & our miracle working God.
A song related to this theme:
Thank you that You are a miracle working God,
That Your Word & promises prosper & are all fulfilled in & through Christ Jesus.
Jesus, thank you that came as Immanuel – God with us,
That you are my Saviour, eternal King & Lord.
Holy Spirit overshadow my heart & life with Your presence & power,
That I might give birth to & fulfil the plans & promises of God for my life.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
