Godly living in an ungodly world.

In Psalm 141 we see David seeking to honour the Lord with all that he is & all that he has. David describes himself Lifting his hands in prayer, Guarding his lips & mouth, Watching over his heart & Looking up to the Lord. These are the kind of spiritual practices that will keep us walking in close fellowship with the Lord. As we approach the close of 2023 & embark on a journey through 2024 let us be those who are carefully reflecting upon the quality of our spiritual lives. Today we will focus upon Guarding our lips & mouths.

Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth;
Keep watch over the door of my lips. Psalm 141:3 NKJV

As David prays, he asks the Lord for help & strength with his speech.
David realises that the mouth & lips are doors & gates for our innermost thoughts & attitudes. They need to be watched over constantly & closely guarded – this is no easy task! David acknowledges he needs the Lord’s supernatural aid to accomplish this. Carefully monitoring & watching over our speech is a repeated theme in Scripture (e.g. Psalm 19:14; Proverbs 10:19, 13:3, 16:24, 17:27, 18:21; Ephesians 4:21, James 3:1-12).

David calls upon & cries out to the Lord for help with his speech as he desires it to always honour the Lord. Jesus teaches that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Luke 6:45) – it is the overflow & outpouring of what we treasure in our hearts. We have internal words (thoughts & attitudes) & we have spoken words. It is important we honour the Lord both internally with what is contemplated & externally with what is communicated. SELAH We walk in wisdom when we carefully watch over our speech & guard our mouths & lips.

May we be people whose speech is continually full of grace & seasoned with salt (pure & godly) (Colossians 4:6). The tongue is small but wild & powerful. If we don’t manage it we will find it managing us!! Guard your mouth & lips, monitor your internal contemplations, so that in them, & through them, you might glorify the Lord. May the words of our lips & the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in thy sight O Lord our God. Hallelujah!!

For Reflection

  • How gracious & pure is my speech (inner & outer)?
  • In what ways do I watch over & guard the door & gate that is my mouth?
  • Meditate upon the need to constantly guard our lips & mouths.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that You gifted we with the wonder of speech & thought,
Help me to use them always for Your glory.
Jesus thank you that you are full of grace & truth,
Teach & train me in the importance of guarding my heart & mouth.
Holy Spirit help me to control & guard my mouth,
That my speech may be full of grace & seasoned with salt.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
