Godly living in an ungodly world.

In Psalm 141 David describes himself Lifting his hands in prayer, Guarding his lips & mouth, Watching over his heart & Looking up to the Lord. These are daily disciplines that will keep us living godly & holy lives; staying close to the Lord. To live consistently for the Lord we not only have to guard our mouths & lips we need to be those who watch over our hearts. Today we will focus upon Watching over our hearts.

Do not incline my heart to any evil thing,
To practice wicked works
With men who work iniquity;
And do not let me eat of their delicacies.
Psalm 141:4 NKJV

As David prays he cries out & calls upon the Lord for help & strength to keep his heart pure & upright before the Lord. He is seeking the Lord’s guidance & protection asking to be kept from inclining his heart after any evil thing. David’s desire is to keep his heart clean & his life free from sin. In both regards he needs the Lord’s help & council. It is much like Jesus instructing us, in the Lord’s prayer, to ask the Lord to keep us away from temptation & evil (Matthew 6:13).

David wants to be a person that can stand firm against testing & temptation & here he humbly acknowledges he needs the Lord’s help to do that. SELAH Our hearts need to be constantly watched over. Watched over by us & daily offered up unto the Lord. This is the way to keep them clean & pure. Everything flows from the treasure & abundance that we store up in our hearts (Proverbs 4:23; Matthew 12:34). Each & every issue of life springs forth from the fount of your heart. That is why it is so important that we are faithful watchers over them & constantly bringing them in humble submission unto the Lord.

Biblically, the heart signifies the centre & core of our being. It is where our innermost thoughts & desires are initiated. Everything flows from it. Thoughts, become habits which take hold as lifestyles & character shaping behaviour. That is why it is vital to watch over your heart. If we are diligent & dedicated in watching over our hearts, & looking unto the Lord as we do this, wonderfully the Lord will guard our hearts with His peace (Philippians 4:7). The peace that abides & passes all understanding. The peace that leads us into His presence. So, So, good. May we be people who are faithful watches over our hearts, keeping them pure & clean so that we are fully prepared to serve the Lord effectively. Living holy before the Holy One (1 Peter 1:15-16). Hallelujah!!

For Refelction

  • How clean & pure is my heart before the Lord?
  • In what ways am I battling temptation or sinful patterns right now?
  • Meditate upon the need to ceaselessly watch over & guard your heart.

A song related to this theme:

Heavenly Father,
Thank you that you give me strength to stand firm against every temptation, And that you shield & protect me from evil.
Jesus thank you that despite facing every temptation & test,
You lived a sinless live so that You could be my saviour.
Holy Spirit give me daily help & strength to overcome temptation in my life, Teach & train me to effectively watch over & guard my heart.
This I ask in the mighty Name of Jesus.
